Not surprising to me; I have a friend who has attended a number of the pre-season practices, and he came away very impressed with Lauren's ball-handling skills. Maybe we have an Aus-the-Second in the making.

In the video, Fennelly says Mansfield has "definitely by far... been the leader" in the PG competition. Bolte and Pop will also start. He wasn't sure who else would start.

Re: WBB: Mansfeld to start at PG Thursday

We need Mansfield to be good enough offensively to keep defenses honest, but ISU will likely have enough offensive firepower that she won't be called on to score much. Since she sounds like a prototypical pass-first PG, that could be a very good thing.

Size-wise, she reminds of Stacy Frese. Ball-handling is #1 for BF at PG, so no surprise she gets the first shot.

Makes me think of Erica Haugen - didn't do a ton of scoring, but was a good ball handler and distributed the ball well. She didn't score a ton of points, but could shoot it if needed. Haugen's senior year, she shot about 40% from the floor and the three, actually making 36 3's, so a little over one a game, and averaged 6.3 ppg. That team had Wilson, Welle, Gahan, and Taylor as their primary scorers.

My wife and I were the ones in the student section with the Erica Haugen Fan Club sign in 00-01 (and maybe 99-00 as well -- I don't recall). I'd say the comparison seems pretty accurate from what little I know about Mansfield. Haugen was good enough to start but spent her career backing up Frese and Wilson.

I buddy of mine, who I went to ISU with back in '70s, had a neighbor girl ask if she could shoot hoops in his driveway since he had a basket set up. The little girl was Erica. Pretty sure he didn't imagine than that he would be watching her play for ISU in the NCCA's someday!
