ISU ranked 25th in the Massey BCS rankings

Per Ubben's Thoughts on the BCS Standings: Thoughts on the BCS standings - Big 12 Blog - ESPN

The actual rankings here (look for the "MB" column header): College Football Ranking Comparison

This doesn't really mean much but its a good boost to the old ego.

Thats interesting, I do have to question that N. Illinois and San diego st. is above us with no quality wins. It is crazy to see who we are above as well!!!

If I remember right we're 27th in Sagarin as well. Win against Nebraska this week and I think that even though we wouldn't show up in the human polls we would be somewhere between 21 and 25 in the BCS.

I must be reading this wrong; I see Massey at 41?

And we're at 20 in McCormack?

Like Sorenson, Colley, Bihl, Anderson, or Self (of course) polls; do not like Howell, Hopper, or Junky's poll.

Nebby is 7, MO is 5, CU Later is 64.

    Kansas is 100.

    UNI is MIA.

That is the Massey MOV. Go to the column with "MB" at the top.

If we could take away that K-State loss we'd probably be creeping into the top 30.

The more interesting thing I take away there is that the computers feel the Big XII is by far the best conference in the nation.

Looking clear over at the right side, they said that our stdev for all rankings is 14.31 - third highest of those listed (mean was 45.42, median was 43). Most of our rankings vary from 31 - 59. So it looks like people aren't really sure where we belong yet. Probably due to our inconsistency, playing well against solid opponents in victory and playing horribly against great opponents in defeat. The other schools with a higher stdev are UGA and Arizona St.

I don't know what to expect from ISU, so how would any of the guys that follow football as a whole have a clue?

The only good thing about the NU game for ISU is that it is the first game against a very good team that has not had two weeks, or all summer to get ready for ISU. (Hawk lurker, don't expect us to believe that IA prepared for the first game of the season against directional tech all summer). ISU was still outclassed by IA, OU and Utah no matter how much time they prepared, but they knew the ISUs every move, and that had to add to the lopsidedness of these games.

I'm pretty sure all of our high computer rankings do not use margin of victory. This is a requirement for the 6 used by the BCS computer rankings. Not saying it's good or bad, but obviously the rankings are going to look quite a bit different if you know the scores against Iowa, Utah, and Oklahoma.

BCS only uses polls which to not include score margin. They specifically had any margin of victory/defeat removed from the formula. And you are right, in the six official BCS polls we're no lower than 41 (varies from 27 - 41).

Our highest rank in any of the polls is 20 (with 25 the next closest) and the lowest is 105 (with 73 the next closest). When I tossed out the max/min rankings, our average was about the same at 44 (rounded, up from 45) and our stdev was reduced from 14 to 12.

    105? wtf

To me none of it really matters unless we find one more win. Then it might be a little more interesting. I definitely buy that nobody really knows what to expect from this team though.

Re: ISU ranked 25th in the Massey BCS rankings

This is how the 105 guy explains his rankings:

The Annar Rankings are calculated by comparing yardage statistics (yards per game, per rush attempt, per pash attempt, etc.) of each team with the average yardage statistics from their opponents defense and comparing these numbers recursively until all teams are "connected". The Annar Rankings do not care who won the game, what the score was, turnovers, injuries, game location or special teams play. The rankings aren't a list of who the best football teams are from top to bottom but rather a list of what teams consistently outperform their opponents (and their opponents' opponents, etc.) average yardage stats. Don't take it to mean that because team X is rated #7 and team Y is rated #28 that team X would be the odds on favorite to win a head to head matchup because football games come down to more than who gains the most yards. It's not better or worse than any other ranking system but rather is meant to give some insights on the overall strenghth of teams assuming the turnovers average out, key players stay healthy, kickers don't shank short field goals and most importantly red zone offense and defense.

Well that makes sense that we are 105 in that poll. In our losses we were really bad and our comparative stats looked way bad. In our wins, our stats were not that much better than who we beat.

This puts our comparative stats way out of whack with our actual performance.
