Notre Dame student dies in video tower collapse - ESPN

you'd think they would have something more solid to hold up in 50 mile an hour winds

You would think common sense would prevail and the student would have taken the day off instead of climbing a flimsy tower in 50+ wind.

Even after the tower collapsed, ND kept practicing for 20-30 minutes...

I wonder if Brian Kelly's contract has a "About to get your pants sued off" clause...

    Damn, that is pretty bad.
Tough to be put in a position where you think your job is clearly not safe, but no one is telling you to take the day off, so you put your head down and go to work. Protestant work ethic at ND partially to blame?

Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. They should have had the kid filming from anotjher angle. Some operations just do dumb things.

I would not be surprised if there is a lawsuit because of this.

I donít care where you come from, whether itís Texas, Florida, California, or right here in the state of Iowa, I donít care about any of thatÖ But what I did care about is moving forward from that day on, that we were one team." -Paul Rhoads

Without question. Notre Dame is going to pay dearly and I wouldn't be surprised if Kelly, the AD and the video coordinator are sued personally. I'm no lawyer, but making that kid go up that tower in those conditions seems incredibly negligent to me.

Are you seriously putting this on the student?

I would think common sense would prevail and that someone in the football program would tell him they could go one day without film of practice in favor of his safety.

Exactly. Coaches always talk about developing leaders. Shouldn't one of the leaders of the ND program had brains enough not to send a kid up on a un-anchored tower in those kind of conditions or practice inside for the love of God? Unbelievably stupid!! I'm not one that typically likes to see lawsuits, but I'll have no problem if this family makes a mint off of ND. So senseless.

    Re: tragedy at notre dame

This is terrible, sad and mostly something that could have been avoided. With all the warnings that were in the midwest about this wind, there is no excuse why this kid was even allowed to go up there. I heard about this on the radio yesterday and first thing that hit me was, "What the hell was anyone doing even around that tower, let alone up on top of it."

It's terrible when tragedies like this have to happen to open people eyes to safety issues.

I haven't heard all the issues, I'm sure somewhere someone will say it was rated for well over those winds, but unless it was a permanent structure with steel reinforced concrete, no one should have been near the thing.

Condolences for his family and friends.

    +1000

This is a terribly sad situation, and I would be absolutely shocked if there wasn't legal action taken by the family against Notre Dame and/or Brian Kelly.
