Funny that stat doesn't actually focus on red zone defense.

It's all snark from here on out

We may have let teams in the red zone a lot but we have had a lot of big stops in the red zone. See ISU vs Texas

Re: Falling [stock] Iowa State's red zone defense

Yeah that stinks but redzone stats can be meaningless sometimes. Who cares if you have an amazing redzone defense if your constantly letting teams score from 21+ yards out. Not saying that is or was ISU's case. Just sayin'

Yeah, that's not even a real stat that they used (at least not a reputible one). That's kind of like judging a defense based on how many possessions their opponents have had.

At this point in the season, with the OU and Utah games just behind us, I have a hard time looking at stats. Especially defensive.

Re: Falling [stock] Iowa State's red zone defense

Playing "Bend but Don't Break" defense, Wally said that we'd see a lot of yardage against us and trips to the red zone. They're trying to reduce big-play scores and make them earn it. 24 of 44 trips to the redzone were TD's, 9 for FG, and 11 no scores. Considering that Iowa, Utah, Oklahoma are good offenses, and Texas Tech, Northern Ill. and K-State aren't too bad either. Our D has played some pretty good teams and few if any "easy" games against weak offenses. In theory, our numbers should get better playing Kansas and Colorado, but Nebraska and Missouri loom on the horizon, too. At the end of the day, only WINS count toward anything. That's what we need to go get, despite what our ESPN blogging friend thinks are important stats. Go State!

hmmm.... just might be related to this stat?

    toughest schedule....

guess which team has the nation's toughest schedule per the NCAA website?

    http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/2010/Intern...games_cumm.pdf

play the nation's toughest schedule, you may have more red zone defenses to make.

    imagine that!

So, our defensive stock is falling after we just beat Texas and our opponent scoring % in the red zone rank is 35th nationally?

I get his point, but it isn't our red zone defense that is bad. Its defense everywhere else on the field. We actually are pretty good once the opponent is in the red zone.

Re: Falling [stock] Iowa State's red zone defense

This stat is skewed because of 3 games, but it has
nothing to do with Red Zone Defense. That would be the 45/35 stat, but the are referring to total D.....
