Hilton to Host WBB 2012 Opening Rounds

    http://www.cyclones.com//ViewArticle...CLID=205019166

With Des Moines hosting the regional as well.

HUGE opportunity here if our team can take advantage.

    wow that's huge!!

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

With Bolte being the only 10-11 senior, we might have a really good team in 11-12. This is a great opportunity.

They wouldn't put the Hilton teams in the Des Moines region though, would they? I'd take it if they did, but that just seems like a crazy unfair advantage just for the sake of spiking attendance, even for WBB.

Hopefully one of our youngsters can step up at PG, and we could be a scary looking team in a couple years.

Re: Hilton to Host WBB 2012 Opening Rounds

This is great news. We can really take advantage of having the first-elite eight in Iowa. Our fan base helps the gals, so I see 2012 being our biggest chance of advancing deep into tournament. Wouldn't it be great to see us at least make it to the elite eight, then hopefully a final four. :) Great motivation for the 2012 tournament. Now let's have a good season this year to prepare.

Re: Hilton to Host WBB 2012 Opening Rounds

I guess I'm tired of Wells Fargo Arena getting the plum events over Hilton. In looking at the other sites for 2012, I see that Kingston, RI has a regional. That's a town much smaller than Ames, in the middle of nowhere, and with an arena that seats 7,700. All these reasons I keep hearing for why Ames can't host a regional would seem to apply to Kingston five times over.
Also, I see that UNI is the host university at WFA. ????

Would you rather have Hilton host an opening rounds AND WFA get a regional, or just have Hilton host a regional?

I'm assuming UNI is the regional host because the same school can't host both.

They probably would. You can't play at home in regional tournaments, but I believe the rule only takes into account venues where you played home games that season. We lost to Stanford in the 2009 tournament in Berkeley (40 miles from Stanford). That same season, Oklahoma made the Final Four with the help of a regional in OKC (20 miles from Norman).

I don't think Iowa State can host both.

If Hilton hosted the regional, rules dictate that ISU can NOT be placed in that region.

I wonder if that's the other reason for UNI being the official regional host and also why ISU would never WANT Hilton to host a regional over Wells Fargo. It is nice to have at least one sport that gets the strings pulled for it.

Actually Hilton was the regional host back in 2002. This was back when the top four seeds in each region hosted and you could play regionals at home. We had a chance to win four straight at home to make the Final Four, but we were upset by BYU in the second round.

Yes, I'd like Hilton to host a regional. Other campuses get awarded them, many with much smaller arenas than Hilton.
I've been to Kingston - it's a town of about 7,000 people. Regarding lodging, I guarantee that teams - officials - media will have to stay in Newport - 15-20 miles away.
Ames has much more to offer teams than Kingston, RI, I assure you.
