    Cyclone Striking Minnesota

There is currently a very strong cyclone striking Minnesota. At about 0730 this morning the barometric pressure hit 28.56 in northern Minnesota. The all time record low in the Twin Cities is 28.55. The center of the cyclone is heading southeast toward the Twin Cities. They are predicting sustained winds of around 30mph and gusts in the 50-60 mph range.

The Gophers are doomed. Remember Jack Trice!!!

If they recall our story against Colorado couple of years ago, I believe they'll want to schedule a game this afternoon so they can get another "W" in their record

    Re: Cyclone Striking Minnesota

That's pretty cool, but it doesn't compete with this:

1996 Lake Huron cyclone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Between 1200 UTC September 14 and 0000 UTC September 15, visible satellite imagery of the vortex revealed a resemblance to a tropical cyclone, with an eye-like feature about 19 miles (30 km) wide.[1] In addition to the eye, convective clouds had also formed, creating the eyewall of a tropical cyclone.[2] Furthermore, feeder bands of convective showers continued extending westward to about 310 miles (500 km). Soon after the cyclone passed buoy 45008, winds turned to the east-northeast and rapidly increased. In contrast to earlier in the storm's life, which had more energy in the high levels, now it was near the surface. Surface analysis indicated that a weaker cyclonic circulation perisisted over the eastern shore of Lake Huron with another center north of Lake Ontario.[1] During this 12-hour period, the cyclone diminished rapidly, mainly in the lower troposphere. Twelve-hour height rises also occurred ranging from 66 – 197 feet (20 – 60 m). The cyclone decayed and left Lake Huron September 15.[1]
In essence, Lake Huron had a subtropical/extratropical storm. That's just pretty sweet.

I live up in Northwest MN...looking out my window right now and the grass is already covered in snow. I live in a wooded area and have heard a few what sound to be farily large tree limbs snapping.

Heard on the radio earlier today that some of the pressure readings around MN were what you would see with a cat 3 hurricane.

I heard by two different sources low barometric pressures of 28.20 and 28.21 up there for you guys which meteorologists believe would be all time lows for the contiguous 48 states when a tropical storm is not present. You are lucky your head didn't explode.

    Barometric pressure record?

(MPR was reporting the 28.20 this morning)

Wasn't there a movie about this? Barometric pressure dropped, the US became a total sheet of ice, wolves tried to eat people, and the Mexicans wouldn't let us cross the border.
