    All-Star Game

Great game, but how do you NOT hit Pujols there for Rowand? The only reason Rowand made the team was for his defense... I wonder if getting yanked in the All Star game will effect Putz as the Mariners are hoping to make a surge in the West? Who is going to make a trade for Dimitri?

    Re: All-Star Game

From watching the Cards this year, I think LaRussa was looking for a way to give Albert a break if at all possible. I think deep down he wasn't too happy he decided to participate in the HR derby either, but that is just a hunch. I'm not too sore over him not hitting though, but I'm sure Albert would have loved to come up clutch like he can. I think the NL lost the game on that check swing by DLee anyway. I was pumped when Soriano went deep and was hoping Lee would do the same, but I think the NL got a lucky call there

...or even hit Pujols for Hudson? LaRussa said he wasn't averse to putting Pujols in at 2B. I'm in no way a Cards fan, but I hate the AL and can't stand seeing them win. I can't figure out why Pujols' own manager wouldn't give him a shot. He was the only position player left on the NL bench, for crying out loud, and a legitimate walk-off threat.

I thought for sure he was going in for Hudson....

I was glad to see Soriano take one yard, wish D-Lee would have done the same.

    Re: All-Star Game

Well, let me first out-right state that I am an avid Cards fan

You guys have to understand the inner workings (or madness) that is the brain of Tony LaRussa. The man LIVES AND DIES by statistics. I can tell you exactly why Hudson stayed in the game, because it's a lefty-right matchup. Same with Dimitri Young. If LaRussa has the opportunity, he will always taking a lefty hitter vs a righty pitcher or vice-versa because the statistics say that an opposite hitting batter has the better chance...statistically.

As to why Pujols didn't bat, there's probably some insane reason like Rodriguez struck him out 3 times in a pony league game back in 1982 or something like that. Cardinals fans see hot hitters sit in the middle of a great hot streak because they "are stastically struggling against the starting pitcher of the other team."

As a long-time Cardinals fan, I've learned to live with the way he coaches

    Re: All-Star Game

I figured he would let Hudson hit, lefty with speed, .300 hitter, he puts the ball in play and the D still has to make a good play to get him out... I just thought he would hit Pujols for Rowand though, I mean the guy is a free swinging right hander with average pop... He gives his guy the chance to be a star...

    Re: All-Star Game

I was listening to the post-game radio show and whoever was reporting from the field said that Albert packed up his stuff and was not even in the dugout during the ninth inning. I didn't see the game on tv, just what I heard on the radio.

So Cardinal fans wouldn't have been ****** if the game went into extras and Albert was forced to play the outfield?

or what if it went into extras and then the pitcher was forced to bat? who would've wanted to see that happen?

Don't confuse hope for a plan.

They did a pan of the NL dugout during the 9th and he was there. They showed him before the bottom of the 9th when they were talking about who was left on the bench and then showed him during Hudson's at-bat. I really doubt that he left before the game was over, especially since it was so close and he was one of a few bench players left.

If it would've come to the point where the pitcher batted instead of Albert, I know many Cardinal fans (and NL fans) would have been crazy mad.

    Re: All-Star Game

Here's an article from the Cardinals website:

The Official Site of The St. Louis Cardinals: News: St. Louis Cardinals News

You can tell that Mr. Pujols was none-too-pleased that he did not play, here are a couple of quotes from Albert:

"Ask the manager," Pujols said when asked about not playing. "He's the one that you need to ask. I have no idea."

"If I wasn't expecting myself to play, I wouldn't come up here," he said. "Believe me, if I couldn't play, I wouldn't show up here. I'd rather stay home with my family. But that's the way it is."

"It happens to other guys," he said. "Maybe he was saving me for next year's All-Star Game."

As a Cardinals fan, I'm just hoping this doesn't affect the relationship between LaRussa and Pujols.

    Re: All-Star Game

ESPN has an article about Pujols upset at Tony too. Honestly it's no big deal. He's not the only player that didn't get to play and of all people it was his own manager so you'd think he'd have a little more understanding.

I was hoping Lee would hit a HR to win the game there. Wouldn't that have been something, 2 Cubs win the game to give the NL the home field advantage for the WS. If any year for the Cubs to get there it would be this year if that had happened. I didn't watch the entire thing start to finish but had the game on the whole time and I was definately tuned in during the 9th which was quite fun to watch.

    Re: All-Star Game

I suspect there might be a number of NL managers and players that are not too happy with Tony LaRussa either. The All-Star game determines home field advantage for the World Series. I'm not sure that HFA for the WS is as big a deal as it might be in BB or hockey for example, but it can't hurt.

All this talk from Tony LaRussa about how important it is for the NL to win the All-Star game, and then not batting Pujols when there is a great opportunity for him to extend or win the game...
