    Need PC help!

Just installed additional hard drive on new pc, now it won't boot. When I unhook new drive, it boots fine. I don't have a "boot disk" I can boot from or I'd try that. Can you create your own with windows 7?

    IDE or SATA hard drive?

SATA (same as drive 1 if that matters)

Did you check the jumper setting on the drives?

From everything I've read, you don't have to mess with jumper settings for SATA drives.

Yeah, I suppose I should have read the previous 2 responses before blurting out the first thing that came to mind with a hard drive problem.

    Re: Need PC help!

When the PC boots up hit the key (sometimes the "del" key) to enter the bios. Go into the bios settings and look at the SATA channel where you installed the new hard drive. If you look at the motherboard where you connected the new hard drive to the motherboard; they sata connectors are usually labeled with a # like sata1, sata2. In the bios make sure the bios is set to autodetect on the channel you connect the hd too. Also re-check the connections to the new hd. You do know that there are 2 different cables to connect, right? One supplies power and comes from a cable that originates at the power supply. The other is the SATA cable that goes to the motherboard. That carries the signals to talk to the hard drive but if the drive isn't powered up it can hang and not boot.

    Re: Need PC help!

The other thing that can cause this is the boot drive order. For example, lets say your existing hd is on sata2 and the new one gets installed on sata1; the bios many times is set to boot off the 1st hard drive. The first one used to be the original drive. The first one now is the new one. The new one doesn't have an OS yet. Slight problem ... the computer refuses to boot. You can either 1) change the boot order in the bios or 2) disconnect then reconnect the sata cables on the motherboard; when you reconnect swap the order -> old hd on sata1, new hd on sata2.

I appreciate the input. Unfortunately, I can't even get far enough into the boot sequence. It hangs up before I even get the option to enter the bios or boot settings. I have given up for now. I removed the drive and ordered an enclosure from newegg to convert it to usb 2.0. Hopefully I'll be able to access it that way.

I have a Dell 560. I actually tried rebooting while holding down the F2 key...nothing...it hangs up before I can even get into the setup.

Again, this is not relevant for SATA drives, but thanks anyway.
