    ASU AD is the anti-Pollard

Cash for major Sun Devil Stadium fixes elusive | EastValleyTribune.com

Seriously, read the article. They need a lot of renovations done to their football stadium and all the article talks about is how he has no idea how they are going to get the money. Uhh... What? Isn't that your job? Shouldn't you have a bold idea to raise the money? It is an absolute must for ASU since they have to renovate their stadium because it is literally crumbling. Tough to get excited and rally around that guy.

$3.4 Billion is a pretty large chunk of change to raise...

Chuck Norris wouldn't need to raise 3.4 billion - he could just give the stadium a swift roundhouse kick and it would shape back up

Re: ASU AD is the anti-Pollard

If you look at the ISU construction website, there are almost $600M worth of construction projects going on at ISU right now (either recently finished, under construction or in the planning stages). That includes over $100M for a Biorenewables Complex, $75M for new chemistry facilities, $48M for the Vet Med expansion, $20M for a geomechanics laboratory, $100M for Hilton, $20M for Jack Trice, $21M for the MU, $14M for the New Century Farm, $12M for dining improvements, and several smaller projects.

ISU is going to be right up there at $3.4B or above if we're looking at the next 20 years.

So, what's this guy doing to earn his salary, then?

Seeing crap like this makes me happy that we have JP. I remember being skeptical about JP when he was hired. Wow.....strange to think back on that.

I wonder if it is more than a coencidence that both followed Gene Smith... I know that Van de Velde was always complaining that Smith left him a huge mess to clean up...

I wouldn't know one way or the other if Gene left a mess, but he certainly left ISU in a lot better shape than when he got the AD job.

When Bruce met with the baseball team the day he cut the program he told them that Smith made the fans alot of promises he couldn't/never intended to keep (such as bowling end zone with basketball facility underneath). He said that Smith left the program running at such a shortfall that he had to make drastic moves to stop spending.

Not even close to true. That FPM report goes all the way through 2011, and it totals a tad under $600 million. That includes a LOT of brand new construction of major buildings and additions, most of which take up the last remaining buildable spaces on campus. This is the last big push of new construction that we're going to see for quite a while, because they'll have to either open a new campus or demolish buildings in order to do any more major construction. That said, even if they somehow did manage to pump out $600M in construction every 5 years, after 20 years, that would still 'only' be $2.3 billion. ASU needing $3.4 billion at minimum in the next 15 years is pretty staggering (and worrisome, if you're affiliated with the school).

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

I thing Gene Smith had a great personality and did a good job of bringing in some good coaches ie: Tim Floyd, Billy Fennelly, and yes Dan McCarney. However I'm not so sure he ran a great financial house.

Van De Velde was a good number cruncher and did run things soundly from a financial stand point, but horrible people skills.

Pollard seems to be to be a good cross between the two.

More like 'the best of both worlds. And then some.'

I don't know anything about the behind the scenes stuff, but on the surface, Gene Smith created some excitement, and had some good hires. I would trust that farther than what Van de Velde says.
