We'll never compete with the big dogs with a bunch of Iowa boys

    Signed-
    Austen Arnaud
Alexander Robinson (Minnesota is close enough)
    Ben Lamaak
    Jake Williams
    Josh Lenz
    Micheal Oconnell
    Kirby Vanderkamp
    Jake Knott
    Jeff Woody
    Jake McDonough
    Grant Mahoney
And plenty of other "Iowa Boys" who played big roles in yesterday's win at Big Bad Texas.

Listen, I don't discount the importance of recruiting the south, but I've heard way too many times from people (on this board too) who think our team begins and ends with recruiting in the south.
Sure, the numbers are greater down there, but I coach high school football here and travel around the country in the offseason to clinics and other schools, and can say the top talent here is as good as the top talent anywhere.
Throw in the tons of Iowa boys at that other school out east and you've got a pretty talented crew. In-state recruiting needs to be at the forefront especially with some incredible talent in the likes of Quentin James, Austin Ebertowski, and Amara Darboh making their choices over the course of the next year.
There's a bunch of others and with the Spread Offense finally becoming more prevalent here, you will find more players coming out of high school knowledgeable about zone schemes and passing than we've had in the past few years when half the kids in Iowa came from Wing-T or Double wing programs.

If you want to compete year in and year out, you have to recruit the south.

So let's not discount the fact that we can rarely sign the top 3 or 4 kids in our own state, shall we?

Throw in A.J. Klein too. Wisconsin is close enough.

I'm saying we need to work harder. I've been around guys Iowa and Iowa State are recruiting in the past, and Iowa works VERY hard to get on kids early. That's the part that really frustrates me. So many people just think "ah, he'll be a hawk." Its no accident, those guys, especially Reese Morgan, work their tail off in recruiting the Iowa boys

We had plenty of "southern boys" making contributions yesterday. This is also one of the worst Texas teams in the Mack Brown era. I agree that you can win with a fair amount of Iowa, midwest kids but you need reinforcements, too.

Let's not forget what happened against Utah and OU in weeks prior. We definitely need upgrades in our recruiting.

I don't disagree, I just think we need to work harder at our in-state recruiting.

Why wasn't this thread started the last two weeks? We don't get the top talent in Iowa, haven't gotten the top talent in Iowa, and likely won't get the top talent in Iowa with a few exceptions. And why are we counting guys outside of Iowa?

    Good point. Why bother?

Great point, wartknight! I believe CPR is working as hard as Mac did in relationship-building and emphasis on Iowa kids. I know he had a lot of work to do after Chizik basically wrote the state off.
Yes, Reese Morgan has been invaluable to Iowa recruiting. Iowa high school coaches trust and respect the guy. Just wish CPR could get an Iowa high school coach of comparable status on ISU's staff, maybe as recruiting coordinator?

Chris Doyle is also huge in Iowa's success. His strength and training program can take average Iowa high school kids and turn them into starters. We need to have a strong strength program to compete at the level we want to be at

Re: We'll never compete with the big dogs with a bunch of Iowa boys

Plenty of these guys have made plays, just not collectively, over the last 3 weeks. When it all comes together it works pretty slick.
You guys are acting like I'm advocating recruiting ONLY the state of Iowa. My point is that the top talent here can compete with the top talent anywhere, and we need to work harder to get that, not stop recruiting everywhere else. There is some special talent in Iowa high schools right now, and we need to make sure to land those guys, not just assume they will be hawks.
