Looks like the plan to offer early retirement as a way to reduce the budget worked.

Re: About 1/2 of Regents Institutions Early Retirees Not Replaced

The sad part about it is that it really can create a shotgun approach to choosing the future of a given department. Instead of a smaller, more focused department, all of the remaining faculty can feel like they're on their own little island with very few colleagues doing similar things. Additionally, certain courses are lost or taught by somebody with with much less expertise in the area. It makes it next to impossible for a department to have any vision or plan to meet the changing needs of students.
