    Welcome to Flatland

Scientists at Fermilab are investigating if all three spatial dimensions actually exist.

The article is in Popular Science:
Researchers at Fermilab are building a ďholometerĒ so they can disprove everything you thought you knew about the universe. More specifically, they are trying to either prove or disprove the somewhat mind-bending notion that the third dimension doesnít exist at all, and that the 3-D universe we think we live in is nothing more than a hologram. To do so, they are building the most precise clock ever created.

The universe-as-hologram theory is predicated on the idea that spacetime is not perfectly smooth, but becomes discrete and pixelated as you zoom in further and further, like a low-res digital image. This idea isnít novel; recent experiments in black-hole physics have offered evidence that this may be the case, and prominent physicists have proposed similar ideas. Under this theory, the universe actually exists in two dimensions and the third is an illusion produced by the intertwining of time and depth. But the false third dimension canít be perceived as such, because nothing travels faster than light, so instruments canít find its limits.

I'll be honest, there's no way they get concrete proof that the 3rd dimension doesn't exist.

They cannot move faster than the light or time that they are surmizing gives the hologram. The distortion alone can be attributed to random electron paths.

You're probably right, although in science there's never such a thing as "concrete proof".

It'll be interesting to see what results they do get and what conclusions can be drawn from them, though.

This sounds suspiciously similar to my 4th grade science project.

They say country music speaks to the heart. Unfortunately, it has to go through your ears to get there.
