    dog question

Half of my dogs face was swollen when I got home tonight. Any ideas?

Have a feeling I will just wait it out and see what it looks like in the morning

Looks like a tumor that my old dog used to have, except those usually take a long time to develop....

    Re: dog question

I don't mess around with facial swollenness anymore. This looks just like a tooth infection. However, when my little dog came home a few months ago with puffiness on both sides at the end of his snout, it turned out to be from cyanide that a neighbor was using to kill moles. He never recovered. Another neighbor with a bigger dog was able to be treated at the ISU vet center in the middle of the night. If you dog is able to wander to areas out of your control, you may not want to take any chances. At least call the ISU vet center and talk to a vet. They are great.

My mom's lab had something similar except it was the ear. Treated with meds and ear drops. May not be as bad as it looks.

It may be something simple. I hope so. Sorry to be paranoid, but I just don't make assumptions anymore after losing our great little guy.

    Re: dog question

Could be a wasp or other insect sting. Could be chasing parked cars...
Either way I'd have it checked out.

    Re: dog question

I have a chocolate lab, came home once and her face was really swollen, we could hardly see her eyes. She took prednisone and it was gone. Found out she has LOTS of allergies which caused the issue. This has happened to us in the spring and the fall.
I'd go to the vet to have it looked at.

    Re: dog question

I'll bet you anything it's an allergic reaction that will be gone or almost gone by morning.

(in the event that this is not the case, this poster assumes no liability).

I had a shorthair that had the exact same thing happen and we stuffed a handful of benadryl down her throat and she was fine within a couple of hours.

Also, your dog could have just switched from Skoal to RedMan.

    Re: dog question

Funny, that happened to my girlfriends boxer just last night and we spent 5 hours in the vet emergency room until 2 AM, it was awful. Both of his eyes were swollen shut and his whole face was puffy. So they gave him a benadryl and steroid shot and observed him and told us it was most likely from an insect sting and was an allergic reaction. I would give him a benadryl and see if it does anything first. Also if he had any type of vaccine done today or yesterday that may be it.

Long story short it was 140 dollars for them to tell us to keep giving him benadryl.

    Re: dog question

As long as he / she isn't in pain and can breathe well I'd give it until morning. Looks like a pretty dog though!

Which vet do you use? We go to Dr Ross in Marion. She is good about taking calls and being honest as to whether you should bring a dog in for this or that.

I was also going to add spider bite. Had a boston terrier swell like that once and it was due to a spider bite.
