    Luther College Football Player Paralyzed.

BONDURANT, Iowa -- Last fall, when Bondurant-Farrar High School needed a big tackle or wanted to go deep, the team called on No. 5, Chris Norton.

"He's one of those guys that if there was going to be a collision someplace, there was going to be contact; Chris Norton was going to be involved with it," said Adam Busch, Bondurant-Farrar football coach.

Norton has so many highlights that high school Friday nights turned into Saturday afternoons at Luther College. But last Saturday, the freshman covering a kick against Central College made one of those big hits that left him motionless.

"It was determined there that it was serious spine injury. At that time he did not have feeling anywhere below his neck," said Peter Michell, a Norton family friend.

Norton didn't move, but his parents leaped to their feet.

"This is the only time they've had to make that parent run from the stands onto the field or onto the court," said Michell.

The game stopped for 25 minutes, while fans prayed.

"To feel that sense of surrounding of prayer and comfort there in the stands, and then it didn't take long, in a town this size, for word to get around," said Mitchell.

"Yeah, it was a shock. It still is a shock and I'm not sure it's sunk in with a lot of people. A lot of questions," said Busch.

The guy who wore No. 5 in high school and No. 16 in college was flown to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where he was given a 3 percent chance of ever moving again.

"And since that time, mobility and feeling has increased. There's now feeling in his feet, slowly moving up his legs," said Mitchell.

It is a big step, but there's many more steps to recovery still ahead of him.
Friends are planning to gather donations for Norton during the regional volleyball game on Tuesday night. They're also going to gather here on the school's football field to keep the Norton family in their prayers on Wednesday night.

"He has a great determination to be mobile again," said Michell.

"If anybody had a chance to come back from something like this, I'd put my money in his corner. I would certainly be betting on Chris Norton. That's just the way this kid is," said Busch.

Hope Chris gets better. He played on my 6th grade little league football team. Heck of a football player!

To be fair, the swelling in his spine hasn't been totally gone down, so the prognosis is too early on "paralyzed".

I was going to say. If he is able to feel his legs and move them a little bit wouldn't that not be paralyzed? I wish him the best tho. It seems like this was a bad weekend for footballl injuries.

Temporarily paralyzed is a term. So yes, he is still paralyzed.

Re: Luther College Football Player Paralyzed.

Is that the second college football player seriously injured on a kick return this past week or so? Add to that Kevin Everett's injury during a kick return, and suddenly one of perhaps the most seemingly mundane portion of a football game becomes so much more dangerous.

Hope both Chris and Eric LeGrand can get better. I know that during Kevin Everett made a recovery beyond that of the initial expectations, and that his training as an athlete played a large role in that recovery. Let's pray that the same type of miraculous recovery can happen in these two cases.

There are different degrees of paralysis. From what I remember, anything from minor loss of leg function to full on paraplegia counts as paralysis, what really matters is the spinal cord injury.
