    Difference is defensive line

I know the guys are trying their hearts out but it's the difference in the game so far. We need to make recruiting defensive linemen a priority.

    Re: Difference is defensive line

It just looks to me like we have no strength on either side of the ball and our corners play WAY to far off the line, AND we don't have a quarterback with throwing skill. If it was JUST the D line. OK. But it's way more than that. That's what's depressing. NO POSITIVES!

    Re: Difference is defensive line

Our safety play has been equally bad or worse than our DL play.

    Re: Difference is defensive line

Our d-line is laughable. They would be in the bottom half of any D1AA conference. Not to mention Sandvig has looked like a middle school FS out there.

We have too much DII talent, size and speed out there.

    Re: Difference is defensive line

Our defensive line might be the worst in all of FBS. No hyperbole.

    Re: Difference is defensive line

Quarterback play is just as lopsided as the d-line.

    Re: Difference is defensive line

no pressure--->bad pass defense----->lots of points scored----->no offensive balance/reliance on a passing game that isn't that good---->never having the ball---->worse defense

    Re: Difference is defensive line

I have a serious question, how many Juco D-line guys did we sign? Any? And if not, why not? Everybody, and I mean everybody knew we were thin there.

What worries me is that they didn't even look fired up, even from the opening kickoff. No snarl, no fight.

    Re: Difference is defensive line

You're right, the D line needs work, but they're also on the field way too much. The offense can't move the ball or even run the clock. At all. ISU is last in the league in offense, and probably first in 3 and outs.

It's disappointing, but remember Ferentz got his a** handed to him regularly for his first few years. It's going to take at least a couple more years for CPR to get this turned around. Just hope there's some stud linemen on both sides of the ball in the pipeline.

Very good point. I remember that Deace just went crazy in those years talking about the lack of apparent development in the OL units Ferentz was putting out.

    Re: Difference is defensive line

The way this game looks, I don't think there should be any threads saying that one certain aspect of the team made the 'difference' in this being at least a semi-competitive game. The whole team is simply being outplayed, it appeared from the start that everyone was just a step or two (or three) too slow to even keep the game within 21 points...

I don't know of a positive thing to come out of the game thus far... Well, perhaps the one positive is that Kirby has punted the ball quite well!! 55+ yards per punt is a very nice stat...

    Re: Difference is defensive line

There's no doubt that the biggest need on our team is DL. However, tonight even if we had Iowa's DL, we would have been beaten badly, because we are out-manned at every single other position with a team like OU.

    Re: Difference is defensive line

Our line play is poor, both sides of the ball. Do we have anyone in the wings that will be an upgrade next year? Maybe Casper on O, Nelson on D. The offense has to stay on the field.

One thing I'm still uncertain about is our receivers. How do you know if what we have is good or bad, we can't get them the ball.
