Is he even in school? I thought KJ booted him off the team and he was looking to transfer.

Does he see Gadsen being our guy at 184 and if so, how much debate was given to redshirting him vs. putting him out there as a true freshman.

Last I heard he was still in school, but sounds like he is still looking to transfer, from what I understand he and KJ don't exactly see eye to eye on things anymore..

Last I talked to him he wasn't planning on transfering. That was a couple weeks after school started. Plus he still lives with wrestlers that are on the team.

    Re: Hey wrestling gurus

I would ask him what he has learned in his first year in regards to coaching college wrestlers compared to Olympic and world class wrestlers. What will it take to get the team ready for the Big 12 and NCAA championship? What weights are the different wrestlers competing at? Status of Dylan Long and is Anthony Valles back out for wrestling? What wiegfts will Eric Voelker be working with? Thanks Chris.

That "newer" news than what I heard last, hopefully its true, to good of a wrestler to let transfer from underneath of us, with the recruits some of the other schools are getting, we need all the quality wrestlers we can get/keep.. Just got to get his head squared on straight and do big things

    Re: Hey wrestling gurus

I know this probably would need to be structured in a different way to make it appropriate to ask without offending KJ, but one question I'm dying to know is what strategies he uses to approach recruits and getting them to sign.. The recruits this year for the most part came from Iowa (which is to be expected) and I'm sure his sell to them is obviously if the recruit grew up an ISU fan, then here's there chance to wrestle here.. etc..

But I'm talking out of state, top 25 wrestlers in the nation.. From what i've learned in my years of wrestling is kids look more at who the coach is, what he's done, his reputation, etc, than simply oh they placed 5th last year at nationals, sign me up... You know thats exactly the sell Cael put on when he recruited kids to ISU and now PSU, it was hey, look at me I'm Cael Sanderson, yadda yadda yadda, and it's obvious it works by looking at his roster for this year

But if you go around asking kids who KJ is, or Eric Voelker, a lot of them out of the state of Iowa are going to have no idea who he is, and I think that is where were going to struggle in getting top notch recruits to come to ISU.. I want KJ to be successful, I think he's a good coach, but I'm trying to contemplate in my head what he brings to the table that is going to draw in top recruits...

I'm not bashing on KJ at all, just thinking out loud

    Re: Hey wrestling gurus

I like the question about the differences in coaching and developing college wrestlers versus Olympic guys. Obviously Olympic guys are a lot more mature and have the needed internal drive, while your 18 year old fresh out of high school probably needs a much different approach. I'd be really interested to hear KJs thoughts on that.

I'd be interested to see what his response is too but I'm sure it isn't so hard for KJ. Being the olympic coach for a while certainly helps those like Ryak Finch who aspire to be more than a national champion. Being a National champion probably appeals to those who aspire to do just that.
