Apathy is officialy here for the football team

There's no other explanation for the horrible attendance.

Apathy is here and there's no denying it.

    43k.

The hardcore fans were obviously there, so that wasn't the issue.

I may be wrong, but the fringe fans don't appear to care that ISU plays football.

    Anyone else have another explanation?

I thought attendance looked pretty good last night.

I will say that every game this year being a night game doesn't help.

I live 5 hours away. I can make a day game without spending the money for a hotel room. But night games add extra expense for those of us that have to travel.

Not an excuse, it is a fact.

I thought it looked there were just as many people there last night as there were for UNI. Not seeing the 5,000 missing people. I don't think it looked apathetic in any way shape or form.

I don't know what it is, but I know a fair amount of people (around 10) who were season ticket holders the past couple years but decided not to renew this year.

They still follow the team very closely, but just don't make it to Ames for games anymore. And I can't really give you a good reason why.

    Maybe apathy is the answer...

Re: Apathy is officialy here for the football team

I think it take a couple years in a row to really pack in the seats weekend after weekend. I can remember being a student as we were beating Iowa for 5 years in a row.
At the start of that I vividly remember the stadium never being full and as a student I could take my time getting into the stadium and still get the seat I wanted.
Towards the end of that time you had to run your butt off if you even wanted to be in the lower deck.
It takes time to build great things. We are far from there.
I'm sure we'll probably see this is mbb too. Many will come out to to welcome FH - but what happens when they find out we won't win the B12 in his first couple of years???

I do find that all the "reasons" our fans have for not making games are non issues for our Eastern neighbors.

I thought attendance looked good on my t.v. set. Look go to the game and enjoy it. Quit worrying about other people who may have other things we have to do. We have children and can't make the game everytime. I never understood the people who complain about attendence and people going to the cars at halftime. Just enjoy your time at the game and quit worrying about others.

Show me a night game with a team playing a top10 opponent that isn't sold out.

    It seems highly unlikely.

    Not apathy.

We just do not have the fringe fans until we win.

not too hard to figure out.

I think you're missing the larger point.

I don't care about individuals going to the game. It's not a good return on the dollar right now and hasn't been historically, at least if you want to see good football.

I'm concerned that so many people are choosing not to go and what it will mean to our football program from a financial aspect.

Football drives the athletic department. If we can't sell out a top 10 team, we're in big trouble.

There has been a lot of talk about athletic departments being self-sustaining and I agree that they should be.

The apathy we're seeing could put us in a world of hurt in the future.

People use the economy as a reason why more fans aren't showing up. Well, guess what?

The state is funding a good portion of ISU's athletics and less and less people appear interested in them. It's not a very good return on the dollar and I would not fault the cash-strapped state for withdrawing their financial support the same way cash-strapped fans apparently have.

Re: Apathy is officialy here for the football team

We are fortunate to have the fans that we do. That other team to the East completely owns the casual fan/bandwagon in the state and Nebraska owns a lot of the rest. We have given so little for the 'Average Joe' over the past 25 years that there just are not reasons to believe for them. These are people looking primarily to have fun and be entertained not much different from going to a concert. The team you are there backing and supporting getting its butt kicked isn't fun. Nothing cures this except winning - plain and simple. I think it's pretty clear that we have about 30,000 - 35,000 die hard fans and whatever else we get to show will either be opponents' fans and that small number of Casuals with nothing better to do. We have lost the interest war with Iowa and Nebraska - my fear is that we are losing to 'the movies' and 'whatever is on TV.'

It's losses like this that are big drains on the 'reasons to believe' and really should be avoided at all costs. We needed to buy out of this game period - it's an avoidable setback to a regime that has a chance to build something. We needed to be playing Kent State or Akron in that non-conference game not a national title contender that has the capacity to completely destroy your team's psyche. Just dumb to even have played the game in the first place. Give CPR a chance to build something. We would have drawn roughly the same number for Kent State.
