Football tickets sales at Iowa exceed 2006 totals

IOWA CITY - Season-ticket sales for the University of Iowa's football season have exceeded the 2006 total, the school announced Tuesday.

The UI Athletic Ticket office has sold 45,852 tickets to the general public, school faculty and staff. Premium seats and suites inside the Paul W. Brechler Press Box also are sold out. The university also expects to sell all 10,400 tickets allocated to students.

Fans have opened more than 800 new season-ticket accounts, and faculty and staff tickets have increased by more than 200.

Additionally, the school has sold 1,215 three-game ticket packages, which come mainly from opponents who decline to accept a 4,000-ticket allotment.

Iowa has six home games this year and a current 24-game sellout streak.

And we should care about this.... why? They're selling tickets; good for them. That doesn't affect us in the slightest.

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

I don't get it. This has what to do with Iowa State?

I figured you would weigh in on this with a comment like that.

I think it does affect us in a postive way saying that not only did we increase our ticket sales when coming off a losing season we increased our ticket sales when Iowa has increased theirs.

I think this means that there are some schools that Iowa plays that don't take the entire 4,000 ticket allotment and Iowa turns around and sells the extra tickets to the general public.

Ahh, that makes a lot more sense. I thought it was saying that opposing schools were buying those as a way to save money instead of taking all 4000. Thanks.

Re: Football tickets sales at Iowa exceed 2006 totals

If you really want to compare...

Iowa has 800 new season ticket holders for about a 1.7% growth.

Iowa State has about 3,000 new season ticket holders for about a 10% growth.

New coach, strength of schedule, the Iowa game ticket thing all contributed to that growth.

I don't think it affects us at all. However, one could argue that ONE possible reason for their increase is Hawkeye fans attempting to purchase an ISU/Iowa game ticket through UI by being a season ticket holder.

Ahh that does make more sense...
And certainly explains all of the Texas and Oklahoma fans we sat with last year on road games...

Those two things are mutually exclusive- they have no effect on each other. With comparably few exceptions in the state, people follow and spend money on either Cyclone athletics or Hawkeye athletics, but not both. I've never met nor heard of any regular citizen (not business or politician) who purchases season tickets from both schools. It's the same as saying "We're increasing our ticket sales at the same time Maryland is! Yippee!"* They are two totally separate fanbases that do two totally different things. I'm not going to waste my time looking this up, but I'm willing to bet good money that during those 15 straight years where Iowa beat the tar out of us in football, their ticket sales showed much different trends than ours did. What happens to one means nothing on what happens to another, and if both trends are similar, it's either by coincidence, or a result of a greater economic fluctuation which affects amounts of disposable leisure income across the state (eg. federal taxes, grain prices, or some such thing).

Selling this many tickets after coming off a losing season of Cyclone football is something else. The cynical answer would be 'marketing', and that is basically true. But as we all know, there's a lot more to it than that. That we broke season ticket sales records last year doesn't really surprise me- we were coming off a fairly successful 2005 season, and had really high hopes for the 2006 team. That we are breaking- nay, shattering- season ticket records coming off the 2006 season is shocking and telling at the same time.

*Disclaimer: I have no idea what Maryland's ticket trend is.
