    How Often Does ISU Blitz???

Do they blitz a lot, or do they play teams straight up? Also, does your secondary play mostly zone or man-to-man.

To answer the same questions for the Utes:
Yes, we blitz a ton. The real difference between a lot of other defenses though is that our team prides themselves on their ability to play man-to-man. We will occasionally play zone, but probably 90% of the game we are playing man-to-man in the secondary.

Our guys don't blitz at all. Your QB will be able to sit in the pocket and feel very, very secure. The crowd is also very, very respectful and sits still during the game in order to take in the full strategy of the offensive plays. Our crowd really appreciates sportsmanship and are students of the game.

we blitz some but aren't real good at it, so far this year its always been with a LB, haven't seen a corner or safety blitz yet this year. We play a mix of man and zone, but mostly zone. We also haven't been real good at that either, Blown coverage in last week's game for example. Our defense is not real great by the numbers, but seems to be able to make some stops when needed.

Depends. We will blitz, we will play zone, we will play man to man. All depends what is working and what isn't. Heck, last week we dropped our DE into coverage quite a bit. I wouldn't worry about our blitz though as it is undproductive.

As for your blitzing... there are two keys for us to hurt you
    1. AA will need to find Franklin quick and often. If you bring the heat, Franklin will be open and should have a big game.
    2. Our RBs will need to break a long gain. If ARob or SJ get through that first level while you are blitzing, they need to make you pay
    Now questions for you
    1. Do you have anyone on your DL that requires a constant double team? We have a good OL that is starting to gel and if they can get to the second level our run game can get going like last week.
    2. Does your DL tie up blockers and allow the LBs to make plays (the stats say this is the case)? I just don't see a lot of tackle production from your DL.
    3. How is it your offense does not rank very high in yardage (rush, pas and total) but is ranked 6 in scoring. Are you scoring on short drives? is your defense scoring? Special teams?
    4. Fumbles- did you just have one bad game or have fumbles been bad all year?

Thanks for the info. Here are a few responses:

As far as your TE; he looks like the real deal, and the Utes will need to keep him under control.

One thing to note about the Utah D is that when I said we blitz, that includes a lot of run blitz.

    As to your questions:

    1. The guy that requires a double team is Sealver Siliga -- big 305 pound DT that eats up blocks. He will play on Sunday's, and is the Ute's best D-Lineman.
    2. Absolutely. As I said above, the D-Line has been great at eating up blocks and freeing up our LB's to make tackles.
    3. 6th in scoring, middle of the pack in yards/game: we have a GREAT punt returner in Shaky Smithson, returned two punts for touchdowns, and is averaging 20 yards per punt return. Also, the defense has played really well, and given the offense short fields to work with. However, the Utes have a lot of firepower on the offense, and can go the lenght of the field if needed.
    4. Fumbles: they have really been the only negative out of this Utah team this season. Shaky actually fumbled the ball twice in the opener against Pitt (but has since redeemed himself), and our RBs have had a few fumbles as well. They did clean it up this last game against San Jose St, and didn't turn the ball over. It has also been a main focus for the coaching staff during the bye week.

    1. Where does he line up? Is he a hole plugger or does he move real well. We faced a 300# DT in Ballard who will also play on Sundays. Ballard plays DT and DE for iowa so he is exceptionally quick. If Siliga takes up space, then I like the matchup of hi agasint Hicks or Lamaak. it will be interesting to see the OL DL matchup. We faced, what some would consider, the best DL in the country in iowa and struggled to get the ground game going That was week two and, IMO, the OL has improved every game since with last week being their best game.

    3. We are currently #2 in punt return defense allowing 0.0 yards per return. We have a true frosh punter who has been inconsistent. When he hits it, he can boom it. When he misses, it is usually out of bounds resulting in no return.
    4. We are ball hawkers. Hopefully the staff worked on it sooo much it is in their head a little.

It will be interesting to see what our punt coverage can do against Smithson. We have a freshman punter who has a big leg, assuming he can get the foot on the ball. Lots of hang time that allows our coverage to get down field. He has shanked a few out of bounds, though.

    1. He will lineup inside, and is relatively quick for a 300 pounder.
    3. Pretty insane stat that through 5 games ISU has not given up a punt return. Here is why ISU wants that stat to continue:

Shaky should probably practice waiving his hand in the air. We have punted 20 times and have had 4 returns for 0 yards. The longest return has gone 2 yards. Shaky won't have the benefit of standing there for a second before he makes his first move. We get good hang time and good coverage. Like I said, When Kirby misses, it is ugly but it is usually out of bounds.

Plus Utah better be tight on special teams. Our staff has already faked a FG and a pun this year. no to mention the fake punt last year. If Utah has any special teams tendencies, then ISU will exploit them. It is one area our staff really puts a lot of detail into.
