I was listening to NPR this morning in the car and heard a story on the Sudanese ambassador to the United States and they mentioned that he was an alum of Iowa State which turns out not to be the only connection.

The founder of the main southern rebel group got his PhD at ISU and helped arrange for John Lueth Ukec, the ambassador in the story, to study there as well. In 2004 Lueth wrote a column in the Daily denouncing the genocide that was sparked when the government made peace with the rebel group that he had been a part of. Other rebel groups took that opportunity to begin the the killings that have occured since then. However, since he was appointed as ambassador by the government he once protested he has made headlines for downplaying the scale of atrocities there and blaming the western media.
