    Looking for a Mid-sized SUV

I've recently started looking at purchasing a new car and I think I've decided on a mid-sized SUV. I've been looking at several vehicles including a Jeep Cherokee, GMC Envoy, Chevy Trailblazer, Honda Pilot, or somewhere in that price range.

I'll probably buy a 2006 or used 2007 unless I got a helluva deal on a new one.

I've done the internet research, now its time to start going to dealers. Anyone have any suggestions/comments/dealer choices?

I tell you what. My brother in law just bought a Honda Pilot and its awesome! 3 rows of seat and great comfort. Very quiet and a beautiful car. I know I know, Im a Honda fanboy, but until they give me a reason not to be Ill remain loyal. I would love to own a pilot. Well worth the price in my opinion.

I'd recommend Karl's in Ankeny if you are looking to go GM. Not sure if their free tires for life deal is with used cars too or not but that's a pretty good deal with SUV tires that aren't cheap. I just bought a brand new car from there and had a couple friends recommend I buy there and so far their service has been great.

I have a 2006 Pilot. Very nice car, great engine. The NAV system is okay, but portable ones are so cheap nowadays that its probably not worth the extra price as an option.

Re: Looking for a Mid-sized SUV

Not sure if it's in the mid-size SUV category, but we got my wife a '04 Subaru Forrester and I absolutely love that vehicle. Probably get another one if we were to trade.

Decent room (we don't have kids), but I'm 6'4" and on the heavy side of the scale, and have no real space issues. I wouldn't want to ride across the midwest in the back seat, but it's good enough for jaunts. All wheel drive and good mileage in the mid-upper 20's. Rides nice and is fairly quiet. Knock on wood - we haven't had a problem with it yet.

We got pretty much the base vehicle - no real bells or whistles and I think it was just above 20K.

Re: Looking for a Mid-sized SUV

We have a 2007 Honda Pilot EX-L (no-nav, no-DVD) and we absolutely love it. The only negative is that I thought I would get better gas mileage. On highway, we have seen about 20-21. We bought it for the space and 3 row seating. The leather is soft and comfortable. The front driver's and passenger seats are way better than our Escape we had prior. The cabin is very quite. There is little or no engine noise. All parts seem firm and and of high-quality. If you get the 2wd, the gas mileage is considerably better.

Some things I wish could be better on the pilot: It doesn't have an MP3 line in. No memory seat settings. No telescoping wheel. A built in 120V power source would have been nice but there are a plethora of 12V DC outlets.

Pilot is what we wanted based on talking to friends with them. When we were shopping for vehicles, the Mazada CX-9 hadn't come out yet. The CX-9 is a vehicle you really should check out. The styling is much better than Pilot. It comes with huge 20" wheels. I believe it seats 7 and supposedly has more cargo space than the Pilot. If we were looking now, we would have definitely considered it.

Other vehicles we looked at when shopping: Ford Freestyle, Ford Explorer, Chevy Trailblazer, Hyundai Santa Fe, GMC Arcadia.

That's one thing I didn't like about the Pilot...17/22 gas mileage. I'll check out the CX-9.

Thanks to all for the input so far!

well, i have done this same search. we were looking into the cherokee and such, but the room inside really wasnt much more than a 4 door car. i wanted some room inside because we have two car seats to place in. anyways, long story short, i went with the ford expedition and have nothing but good things to say about it.

I have been told by Pilot owners that the 17/22 is understated - owners have been getting closer to 25-30 highway.

Yes, the gas mileage is not good. I get about 13.5 around town and a little hwy driving. Even the hwy doesn't even approach 22, its more like 17 at best. I don't think its me... My old Wrangler with a 4.0 got 20 on the hwy and 15 in the city, so I was surprised about the Pilots lack of good gas mileage.

That seems a little low from articles I have read and reviews. Very odd.

Re: Looking for a Mid-sized SUV

I would say that 17/22 is probably accurate for the 4wd pilot. Keep in mind the 22 is probably with the AC off and driving at 55 mph over distance. When we drive back to Iowa with our Pilot, we are in 70 and 75 mph speed zones and probably do 5 over the posted. So at 80 mph through Nebraska, we got about 19 or 20. All things considered, I don't think that is terrible. If you want better gas mileage, get a 2wd version and you'll probably get 5 more mpg.

Re: Looking for a Mid-sized SUV

Here is a recommendation from someone that as bought 15+ cars in the last 20 years.

The Honda Pilot is probably going to be the best of the bunch when it comes to reliability and resale value. Another nice thing about these is if you buy a EX-L they come pretty loaded where other makes start out with a very low price but by the time your done you've added 10K to the sticker. If you're going to buy the Pilot you may as well buy brand new. Since they hold their value so well you won't save much money buying a used one.

Most of the others you mention lose a lot of value in the first few years so it would be smart to buy a used model.

This is true. We looked at buying certified used when we bought our Pilot and it was only going to save $3-5k. The packages are very simple which is nice because you can compare the same model at multiple dealearships without the dealers playing the game of "oh, well that model has some things that this one doesn't so that is why the price is different". An EX-L 4WD is the same everywhere. The only options are the Nav and DVD and the price add for those things is standard.
