2008 in state recruiting, not a great year.

Let me preface this by saying im bored and really dont know a whole lot about what im talking about, maybe a little, but im bored and love recruiting.

Many have said this before, but im really starting to see that Iowas class of 08 is really less than exceptional.

    http://iowastate.rivals.com/viewrank.asp?ra_key=1849

The 2 top players(Hoch, Cotton), according to Rivals decide they're leaving the state, as does number 10(Davison).
#3 is a coaches son who is probably decent.
#5(Coleman) who plays for a great class 4A program decides veryyy early to commit to a div 1-aa school, Western Illinois. Im surprised he didnt wait til into his senior year and see if anyone likes his senior tape, i see W. ill as a fallback option.

    On the positve side...
Someone on here said that KF told him we had a good shot at #4(McDonough)
#7 (STaggs) would be a good pickup. Has done pretty well at some summer camps, nice size, speed and strength.

Other players left off this list, many of them could be better than the ones already on it.

Adam Robinson, RB, DM Lincoln. getting to know a bunch of ISU players in the Cap City.
Ben Durbin, LB, Gilbert., hes in our own backyard, has good size and speed

There was a good interview of Willie Argo (prospect #8) on the Davenport TV station a couple of days ago.
His father Bill Argo played baseball at Iowa State and then for a few years in the minors and he is currently his son's baseball coach and Davenport Assumption.
Willie Argo stated that he hadn't decided yet on whether to play baseball or football in college.

Can anyone be suprised that Cotton is leaving? I mean ISU fired his dad (of course he was most of the reason Dmac was fired).

I am very surprised Hoch is considered the best recruit in Iowa. I am from Harlan, and he is good, but nobody in the whole state of Iowa is better???? I guess it's also just surprising to me because as good as Harlan is year in and year out, this is the first guy to go D1 in a long time.

The talent level of the in-state recruits this year isn't anything phenomenal though. Cotton could be good, but his stock was dropping when he made his verbal. After Cotton, there really aren't that many players that either Iowa or Iowa State are really going after hard. If either one of the schools was recruiting them as hard as they could have, we would have seen more in-state recruits go to one of the Iowa schools.

Hoch is big for his age and smart. That is all I know about scouting a player. Harlan had a player at eiu in the 90s. Alan Patten, from Harlan, played for Walden , I believe, in the late 80s. Patten got his schollie after having his way with an eiu commit in a playoff game.

If 10 guys get schollies to D1(BCS Division) this year, I would think that would be the most in a while, but for some reason my mind isn't going back too far.

That was me and I got it straight from the big guy himself; he brought up the name without prompting when I asked him if he was going to let us have any of the "top ten". This was after I complimented his son on being the #3 ranked recruit and tried to sway him to the ISU side of the state....

The other thing of interest from that conversation involved his son's comments on the #1 rated prospect, the Nebraska recruit from Harlan. He said he'd been watching tape at home and wasn't all that impressed; asked dad if he'd analyzed the tape and KF was way too savvy to reply with me around! I wouldn't expect him to be overly complimentary of a Nebraska commit anyway...

#6 that Vandenberg from Keokuk has a cannon of an arm. Too bad he's from the arm pit of Iowa or he'd probably have a few more offers.
