    Weird computer sound problem...

Here's one for the PC gurus...

A coworker of mine needed to get the sound running on his PC for some on-line training videos he was supposed to watch. He has an old Dell pizza box GX-??? computer running Win2KPro. The processor is a Celeron 833 MHz. This isn't much of a PC by today's standards, but for what he does, this machine is adequate.

Anyway, I thought this would be a snap. As the motherboard has onboard sound, I just grabbed some speakers and plugged them in. So we start playing sound files, and got some very, very strange results...

The sound plays at the right speed, but the pitch is elevated, so that you have a chipmunk-like effect, but not quite that high. Kind of like playing 33-RPM at 45-RPM, except for the duration is correct. A one-minute clip plays for one-minute, but at a higher pitch. This happens for all sounds...system sounds, WAVs, MP3s, AVIs, etc.

I've never seen anything like this. I checked the sound control panel, but I don't see any effects enabled that would cause this problem. There are no driver updates that I can find. Is this some kind of timing problem? Virus? Faulty sound chips on the motherboard? Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

Wow, that is strange?? Does he have an open slot that you could try a cheap sound card in if need be?
To me I would guess it's a problem with the on board sound, but don't have anything to back it up.

That's the next step. I've got a cheap one laying around that I'm going to install.

Well the fact that he's running a Celeron processor already tells you it's a crap PC...

    Re: Weird computer sound problem...

Could it be the speakers? The files are playing correctly but with a high tinny sound so perhaps the speakers are bad?

Just a suggestion before you open up the case and install a new sound card.

While accurate, not exactly helpful. You use what the boss gives you...

I'll take some other speakers in tomorrow and check it out, although it sounds to me like there is a significant frequency shift occurring...
