    Jim Harbaugh

I haven't followed Stanford too closely, but what do you guys think about the state of the Stanford football program? Pretty much a knock out hire with Harbaugh. They're up to #9 in the country now, taking on Oregon this weekend.

They beat USC twice since he's been there, and notre dame and a few other big wins. Had a heisman candidate in toby gerhart and a future candidate with Andrew Luck.

I remember Iowa state giving him a good look before going with chizik. Harbaugh seems like a pretty darn good coach, and he's gotten stanford into the class of the pac 10.

I'm hoping the 49ers hire him for next year if we continue to tank the rest of the season.

    Re: Jim Harbaugh

He's got them playing pretty well. I watched them absolutely destroy wake forest the other weekend, as well as the dismantling of Notre Dame. Who knows how great those victories actually are, but they were certainly impressive to watch. Harbaugh is doing a great job. That said, is there any doubt that the moment the Michigan job opens up again, he would be on the first plane to Ann Arbor?

    Re: Jim Harbaugh

He was raised in the Stanford area I think, Watched them play UCLA and ND. This game vs Oregon should be interesting. Oregon better come to play defensively because I think Stanford is one of the few teams in the nation that can score with Oregon

Even if we had hired him he would have left like Needledick. He was a great hire for Stanford.

    Re: Jim Harbaugh

His name was rumored to be in the mix. But he was coaching at a school that did have schoolarship players, so it was hard to tell how well he would adjust to the D1 level.

First, the job has to open up which won't be happening soon. There is no way they fire Rod if his offense keeps doing this unless they overlook the fact that the defensive roster was left with slightly more than nothing and the guys RR did bring either got in trouble or refused to live up to their end. I think they finish 8-4 which is good enough to keep him. Then, Michigan would have to get over the comments made by Harbaugh about the institution two years ago and offer which I would give 50/50 shot.

    He blew the interview, badly.

    Edit: So I've heard.

You know, I don't know about that. I think he would have eventually, but not right away. He seems like the type of guy who would fit in Iowa pretty well.

have you noticed that nearly every "big" state of iowa HS recruit has an offer or at least interest from Stanford? Im serious, probably 9/10.

    strange.

RR was left with much, much more talent at Ann Arbor than Harbaugh was at Palo Alto. Yet in comparing the two, Stanford has exploded, while Michigan has struggled. It's very understandable why many Michigan fans want Harbaugh.
Also, let's wait and see how RR does in the Big Ten - that will seal his fate. They were 1-7 last year.

There's still a lot of season to go. RR is everyone's darling now, because of a few wins, but he was on very thin ice before the season. It wouldn't take much for the naysayers to come out again.

And Jim's negative comments won't matter a lick if Michigan has a vacancy, and Harbaugh is still the hot young up and comer, who happens to be an alum.

    Re: Jim Harbaugh

Harbaugh has a good thing going at Stanford. He gets to not only recruit California but because of Stanford's elite academic standing, he can recruit across the country. If they beat Oregon next week, they'll have the inside road to Pasadena.

It's not set in stone he'll someday return to Michigan. His standing as a "Michigan Man" was knocked down a few pegs after he took shots at the school a few years ago.
