    OT: Beer Brewin'

Any one here tried their hand at homemade beer brewing? A couple other grads students and I have been experimenting with the art. We bottled our first brew yesterday night and for it being our first time, it wasn't half bad. If you have brewed before, do you have any advice on vendors or techniques? We're toying with the idea of entering the contest at the Iowa State Fair (and who says the fair is boring!?). Anyways, it's been an interesting process, just wanted to test the waters.

Also, if there was to be an "official" beer of Iowa State Athletics what would it be and why? I'd say Miller Lite, because it's not as popular as Budweiser, but if you try it with an open mind you find it's pretty damn good! Similar to the relationship between Iowa State and EIU. Your thoughts?

If you bottled yesterday, and are drinking it now, you're doing something wrong. You're drinking flat beer.

We took a few shots. The majority of the beer's bottled and resting for two to four weeks.

I think it sounds fun, but I have no free time, and no patience.

    Re: OT: Beer Brewin'

I always wanted to try it but I've never had the patience or the energy to actually do it. I have too many hobbies already and there are too many way good beers I can just go buy at the local liquor store.

    Someday, maybe.

if you want to drink 20 beers in 1 sitting and just get drunk, maybe.

But any macro brew lite beer isn't good beer. See the beer thread from a couple weeks back under the OT section.

    Re: OT: Beer Brewin'

I went to the store and bought all of the stuff to make it. It's amazing they have all of the stuff to make it and it comes bottled up in boxes that say bud light on the side. All I had to do was put it in a cooler. Get on the boat. Drive around for a while and let the ice cool it down. Then pop this cap thing off and my beer was done. It tasted wonderfull. I am going to try it again tonight.

That sounds like a similar system as to what I bought.

    Re: OT: Beer Brewin'

I love homebrew! If I ever find enough free time to get back into brewing, I'll probably invest in a kegging setup.

What type of beer did you brew yesterday?

Yeah well, ya know, that's just, like uh, your opinion, man.

    Re: OT: Beer Brewin'

We've brewed our own Root Beer before, using Zatarain's and Gnome's root beer extracts. I prefer Gnome's extract.

Sorry, I'm no help when it comes to brewing beer due to the fact that I no longer drink beer. Or any alcohol for that matter.

At first I thought home brewing was going overtime - then I realized it was off topic.

    Re: OT: Beer Brewin'

If you are happy with what is available at the local grocery store that is fine.

If you we're able to go to the Brew-fest last weekend maybe you would know the difference.

If you want to get drunk then drink anything.

If you want to enjoy the taste of beer then try homebrew.

Homebrewing is a great experince to learn the difference among the types of beer

if you have the chance to drink good beer you would have trouble drinking Miller lite or the equal.

There are some good beers on the market but the best is homebrew

I think there is a shop in Valley Junction to get started

Go to Williambrewing.com to get kits and tons of advice. They are real cool and even have a hotline to call and ask questions. I bought a kit a year ago and still use it.

    Re: OT: Beer Brewin'

I generally order my brewing supplies out of Northern Brewer in Minneapolis. I brew Stouts and Porters, sometimes a Wheat beer in the summer. My neighbor brews mead a couple of times a year. Takes about six months to ferment but man it will light you up.
