So one player has to be gone by 2011? Think Railey is going to transfer?

SC, DP and Chris Allen...won't we have 3 available in 12 or are you figuring the guy that won't have one in 11 will in 12?

Railey so far loves it in Ames. The only way right now I see him leaving is if he does not get much PT his freshman year. Then becomes homesick.

I think it's one of White, McKnight, Godfrey, or Railey that will not return in 2011.

Either that or Elgin Cook possibly has academic issues.

If White can play this year, then hes got the talent to be a one and done.

It's probably best not to speculate on who the odd man out could be. Maybe there's something from within and everybody knows why there was room for Sledge or maybe Fred is just expecting the attrition, hard not to at this point.

    Good stuff C-Dub...what happened to 2010-11? ;)

Hey don't get me wrong brother. I am excited for this year too. Not really cuz I think the Clones will be good. I just LOVE college basketball.

I totally agree with you. It isn't fair to speculate, especially considering most of us haven't even seen some of these kids play. That's not good for anybody.

As far as scholarships go for 2012, it was stupid of me to even put a number out there. SO MUCH can and will change before then, it is impossible to know right now.

Re: Basketball Blog: 2011 and beyond

Should we be concerned that we are sacrificing long-term growth?

Hoiberg and Fran are inheriting different situations.

Hoiberg: basically just replaced Mac, with everything else intact. Inherited his top recruit,Cook, the only top 150 player committed to ISU. His recruiting staff has been in place for 4 years. Then,Hoiberg gets to pluck 3 malcontents from the Big Ten, knowing that if they qualified for Big Ten school, they are scholars at ISU. Added a juco, who had no offers. Added two prep players on his own, Sledge and the texas kid. Neither are top 150....so Hoiberg is going for the quick bump, knowing that as a novice coach, he has to show immediately that he knows how to do it.

Fran: Starts from scratch. Builds a staff from scratch. Inherited no recruits for the 2011 class. Has to start building recruiting network in the midwest from scratch. Cannot take Big Ten transfers like Hoiberg, and any other conference malcontents probably will not qualify at Iowa. But, he is doing it right, because he knows that he can coach, and re-build programs. Is not going for the quick hit with transfers and massive juco influx. Secure in the knowledge that Iowa and Barta will not fire him for at least 5 years(Barta will be fired if it is sooner), Fran is taking a longer view. Protect home state, with Uthoff and Oglesby...ok, 1 of 2 aint bad. Bring in Tyler Harris, and hopefully, get him to commit. Keep working on Paige(as Paige's coach indicated,Iowa has been the most persistent school in pursuing Marcus),Gessel, and Woodbury for 2012. Work on Jok for 2013. Keep pushing, but with an eye toward long term success.

Two different programs, two different approaches....both have merit for their circumstance.

Re: Basketball Blog: 2011 and beyond

Picking and choosing ranking services to make our guys sound better just comes off desperate. IMO, ESPN is clearly the worst of the three major recruiting services, and shouldn't be used. Stick to Rivals; they do the best job, IMO.

Or, use RSCI, which is better than any of them individually.

Also, just because a guy is short doesn't mean he has to play the point. The two ultra-short players that are coming to mind for me, Tajuan Porter and Nate Robinson, play off-the-ball more than on the point, which works fine when paired with a taller point guard.

OK, I didn't think of it that way. (one of those 3 could be the guy not around for 11) Good point

No it comes across as being a fanatic. Ever been on phog.net?

In what way? His first recruiting class has 4 prep players and his second class has 3 prep players.

Re: Basketball Blog: 2011 and beyond

We're not sacrificing long-term growth. We have loads of freshman and sophomore talent the next two years.

But we're also looking for immediate success. Without that, there isn't any long-term growth.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!
