    LIFE SKILLS VOLUNTEER APPROVED
Jamie Pollard Statement, Iowa State University Director of Athletics

“We appreciate receiving the approval of the President and the Athletics Council to allow an individual to continue to volunteer with our athletics program in this capacity. We would like to thank the members of the Athletics Council who spent considerable time discussing and developing a set of guidelines for the position.

We would also like to thank those Iowa State University faculty and staff members who expressed concern on this issue. Their concerns were the basis of the guidelines that were established to ensure the interests and rights of all student-athletes are protected.

We have a very solid framework to guide this volunteer’s activities and the
mechanisms to review their activities annually. The Athletics Department accepts the responsibility to make certain we follow those guidelines.

Our focus will now shift to preparations for the coming season and helping our student-athletes reach their academic and athletics potentials.”

Neither Pollard nor the Iowa State University Athletics Department will have additional comment on the approval of the life skills volunteer.

I dont know what to think about this comment. At first I was upset that he even mentioned them but the more I think about it, he may be saying that just to spite them.

Their concerns were certainly valid, if a bit uniformed and misplaced. The Athletic Council that reviewed this is composed of faculty/staff from the University. They looked at it from a University perspective related to the athletics.
