2011 IOWA STATE NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE SET

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State football team will open its 2011 season hosting the University of Northern Iowa on a Saturday night (Sept. 3) school officials announced today.

“The game against the Panthers will be our first home opener on a Saturday since 2005,” Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said. “Although the Thursday night opener has been very successful and popular with our student body and the majority of our fans, we feel pushing the opener back to Saturday night in 2011 is an opportunity to show those fans that struggle making a Thursday night game that we are trying to accommodate their needs as well.”

After the game against UNI, the Cyclones will host the University of Iowa on Sept. 10th in Ames and then will play at the University of Connecticut on Sept. 17th.

The game against the Panthers was originally scheduled for Sept. 24. Iowa State also said it has cancelled its game at the University of Utah on Sept. 1, 2011. It will not be re-scheduled.

“The changes to our football schedule are the result of the recent conference re-alignment moves that have affected several leagues across the nation,” Pollard said. “Moving to a nine-game conference schedule in the Big 12 required us to drop a non-league game. Utah was in a similar position with its move to the Pac-10 so we’ve agreed to drop the 2011 game with the Utes.”

Iowa State officials hope to announce future Big 12 football schedules very soon as those plans are likely to be finalized at league meetings this week.

That's freaking amazing that we were able to get out of that @Utah game.

    Chris-
Do we know was there any penalty to ISU for the schedule change with Utah? I'm assuming we had a "home and home" contract with them? I know both teams needed the change, but seems like we came out on top with this decision...

Do we still only get to count a D IAA School once every so many years toward our bowl eligibility?

Happy for it, but not amazed. Utah was going to want out of that one as much as us with them jumping into the pac 10 schedule.

Also... hooray for a saturday kickoff! I understand some like the thursday game, but the fanbase seems to be pretty divided on this, with the group preferring saturdays also tending to be higher paying donors and families.. while i think it should be a saturday every year due to that, at very least it should be an every other year thing, not every year like it has been now.

Looking forward to a full day of tailgating to kick off the season next year!

Tough pre-season schedule for sure...I can see why some think we need to end the Iowa series.

Would love it, but doubtful... we seem to be lucky if that game gets an afternoon kickoff, much less night.

Seriously. I hope we didn't have to pay to much for that, since even though they needed it too it meant they gave up a home game.

No, that rule got changed years ago when everyone went to a 12 game schedule. You can count one I-AA win per year now.

It's not amazing given that both ISU and Utah needed to drop a non-conference game to accommodate new 9-game conference schedules. It's a no-brainer for both parties.

IMO, we should be scheduling UNI every year they are willing to come to Ames.

Re: 2011 IOWA STATE NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE SET

I'm so glad Utah is gone, but keeping UConn as a road game is a mistake IMO. We are probably just to poor to buy out the game.

JP must be hoping for a huge crowd against UNI. It will be a night game and the first game of the season against an instate rival. That is the only reason not to play on Thursday. We had a nice little tradition going with the Thursday night opener too.

I like the Thursday kick-off because it gives us a few extra days after the first game to make adjustments and prepare for game two. Since you always learn a lot the first game, including shuffling around starters, having a few extra days is a great opportunity.
