Oden or Durant? Who would you pick?

Since tonight is draft night, I thought I'd ask.

Re: Oden or Durant? Who would you pick?

I actually voted that it depends on team needs. In Portland's case, I'd go with Oden. They've drafted the athletic lanky kids that can create in the recent past, and it hasn't worked out to date. They need Oden; it would be a very bright future with guys like Aldridge, Roy, and Oden filling it up. Seattle will be a very nice fit for Durant, but they'll still be left without a franchise center...that is unless you consider Chris Wilcox a franchise center

Re: Oden or Durant? Who would you pick?

Oden if you had the #1. He's not the sexy pick that Durant is but impact big men like he don't come around too often. I don't care if you already have some big guys, you pick him and trade one away. Portland had a nice draft last year and with Oden onboard they are going to turn it around I think. Both he and Durant have the potential to turn around those franchises.

Re: Oden or Durant? Who would you pick?

Gotta go with need. I think it's so close, you select the player that will fit into your scheme and personnel the best.

As far as who I think will have a better NBA a career...I go with Durant.

I think Oden will struggle early on. He's not a public guy and the NBA is very public. So I think the hoopla will get to him. Could either just delay his brilliance or cause him some issue.

I agree with this completely. Need be damned. Big guys like this come around once in a blue moon.

Re: Oden or Durant? Who would you pick?

    Durant.

I know big guys like oden are once a decade kind of guys.

    But.

I haven't seen anyone OWN college basketball as a freshman before like Durant did. He could start on an NBA team tomorrow. And he has a work ethic like no other. Ask Rick Barnes. The kid was begging for information on how to get better and he was already the best college player in the nation. I gotta go with Durant. It will be interesting to follow both of their careers. I believe Durant will be a superstar and Oden will turn out to be "just another starting big man".

Re: Oden or Durant? Who would you pick?

I think Durant will be able to produce more points than Oden, but Oden is a big body that all NBA teams are looking for. It's a tough choice, but I voted for Durant just because of his long term appeal.

Re: Oden or Durant? Who would you pick?

I really believe that Durant will be a superstar by the time he is done. I believe Oden will be solid, but unless he turns into the second coming of Shaq, Durant will be better.

Goldent Rule that came from Sam Bowie/Michael Jordan - Best player available.

Up for debate on who that is - but IMO it's Durant.

    You can always trade.

Re: Oden or Durant? Who would you pick?

I'm surprised how many would go for Durant! Don't get me wrong, the guy's great, but the ratio of quality centers to forwards is very small. How many guys not named Jordan have won without a big guy? There are lots of great scorers that haven't won anything without having that inside presence (Kobe, TMac, Dominique).

Re: Oden or Durant? Who would you pick?

It is going to be a scary Portland line-up in a few years. Greg Oden at Center, LaMarcus Aldridge at Power Forward, Brandon Roy at Shooting Guard, Jarret Jack at point gurad... If they can trade Zach Randolph for a decent small forward (maybe a Corey Maggette) then Portland will be set.

No one ever brings up that The Dream was picked first in '84...kind of a similar situation here. But I'm guessing Houston, as great as Olajuwan was, knowing now what every knows, would have paired Ralph Sampson with Jordan for Sampson's last couple of years, and then taken Jordan for the rest of his career with whatever was put around him.
Also, how many teams can you bring up that truly had a center carry the team to a title? Kareem, Russel, Walton...Shaq still had Kobe who killed the Nets/Sixers,etc, Shaq couldn't do it by himself with the Magic against Houston. Duncan is closest recently, and he even had a true Center next to him for the first two and Parker and Ginobli in the second two titles, and Ginobli should've won Finals MVP in 2005.
Oden better be the next coming of all of these guys i've just listed, because, less we forget, Portland has a guy (a completely insane guy mind you) that averaged 24/10 at PF last year, and has a center in Aldridge who is going to be serviceable, the ROY in Roy, and imagine putting a wing/slasher like Durant with that team. Yikes.
Then you add the likes of a defensive center like Oden to a team with Ray Allen, Rashaad Lewis, and other high scoring personnel, and all of a sudden they can play tough D and outscore you. Yikes.
In a round about way, I've kind of proven both sides above, IMO, but honestly, besides the centers I named, what other teams won titles around a center.

I take Durant if I'm Portland, but supposedly, it's going the other way... eh, GO BULLS!!! :) Can't wait to boo the Spencer Hawes pick tonight!

So why don't you keep Aldridge at Center, Randolph at PF (24 pts/10 reb per game last season), with those guards and put Durant (who everyone is already making into a HOFer) in that lineup and let them go?

I agree that Durant has a better chance of dominating offensively, (in a couple of years after he's gained some muscle), and has the tools and potential to become a superstar, but a good big man can get his points and alter the opposition's game plan with good interior defense. It's a lot harder to score if you can't get to the rim.
