    Immigration Bill Dead

It appears the prospects of the Senate passing the Immigration bill are slim.

    Senate Blocks Immigration Bill

While video killed the radio star, talk radio killed the immigration bill, IMO. Laura Ingram was calling Senators' office's yesterday live on her show. It was kind of entertaining.

I noticed Senator Harkin didn't even vote for cloture.

I just posted the same thing.

There was no two ways about it: this bill was amnesty and conservatives rallied to get it defeated.

It is a very rare day in this country when corporate america gets its rump handed to it. Another sign the bushies are dying out.

There was also a very interesting supreme court ruling today that will help keep this country as segregated and homogenous as possible.

Re: Immigration Bill Dies. What are your thoughts?

I'm a HUGE liberal but if you're in this country illegally, there's no reason to let you stay here legally. Yeah we were all immigrants at one time but that doesn't mean we need to keep the doors open.

In a twist of irony, the US was started by insurgents and immigrants that are now fighting wars against insurgents and immigrants:)

On a side note, people have emailed to ask me why I let constant political discussions go on here and it's because that's obviously what a lot of the members want and this place is all about the members. I know some of the topics are issues that flare up pretty easily but it's the summer and people need a place to express themselves. There is more to life than sports, as hard as that is to believe, and it doesn't hurt anything by allowing the discussions go on here. Just ignore the off-topic section if you'd rather not see the political posts.

Re: Immigration Bill Dies. What are your thoughts?

Does anybody know what provisions were in this particular bill in terms of border security? I thought way back when this was introduced, there were provisions for agents, money, security apparatuses (fences, detectors, etc).

I'm sure all that dies with, right?

I don't know what I thought about this. Never really thought it would pass in the first place, and if it did, that it wouldn't work very well anyway.

But first things first. Secure the borders and then deal with those who are already here. This type of "lumping" everything together is what drive me nuts about bureauacracy. So this bill dies - and hundreds and thousands more cross tonight.

Talk about a mixed metaphor. Segregated and homogenous are opposite terms. You meant either desegregated or heterogeneous instead.

You are wrong. I'm using homogenous is the sense of the same race. The SC ruling will allow schools to segregate by race (white schools for whites, no integration). That will keep schools homogenous.

I think it is a good thing. The big thing for me was the gov benefits these millions of people would get. It would crush an already broken medicare/medicaid system. I guess if it could have bankrupted Social Security, that probably would be a good thing so we can finally dump it.

Wrong. No one is allowed to intentionally segregate. Stop being a political drama queen. School choice most be COLOR-BLIND.

First off, I don't think the bill would have been that good. Many illegal immigrants would not have understood the bill or would have been to scared of being deported to comply with it anyway.

I think it was a decent compromise. It wasn't full out amnesty. Illegal immigrants wouldn't just magically be made legal. Its also unreasonable to think that we can deport 12 million illlegal immigrants.

Would it not have also added money into social security? More people paying taxes into it?

Also, are you assuming that all illegal immigrants would have to take handouts from the government to survive? Is there any data saying that more money would be coming out of those than coming in?

Re: Immigration Bill Dies. What are your thoughts?

I have a question... why all of a sudden is this such a big issue? It has been going on for years and years, now in the last 6 months people are freaking out. I would rather see the gov spend their time trying to balance the budget and reduce my damn taxes.
