    5-Win ISU to a Bowl?

Matt & Miller were discussing this yesterday. Obviously this is VERY hypothetical and there are MANY things that would need to fall into place for this to affect ISU (ISU winning exactly 5 games, there aren't 70 qualifying 6-win teams, etc.), but I'm curious how everyone feels on the following points:
    • If ISU had 5 wins and was invited to a bowl game, would you go? What would the deciding factors be?
    • How should the NCAA handle this problem this year?
NCAA discussing possibility of losing teams in bowls - SignOnSanDiego.com

I would only go during my kids' winter break, and if it is somewhere with nice weather, regardless of how many wins they have. However, I think the publicity would be bad. It would highlight ISU's mediocrity across the nation - I think it would be a very big story and everyone would hear how ISU only had 5 wins, etc.

I think the NCAA should first allow 6-win teams that had two wins against FCS teams, then invite five win teams that didn't play any FCS teams. However, I'm sure it would go to the team that gaurantees the most ticket sales and historically travels the best. Also, maybe give the armed forces teams the first shot?

I think the idea sucks all around, 5 wins getting you a bowl would be a joke.

You take the Bowl game if it's offered unless the cost is more than the payout. That's without even factoring the nightmare schedule we have.

Re: 5-Win ISU to a Bowl?

Making it to a bowl game, and more specifically a New Years bowl game used to mean something. Now, a 6-6 team could potentially play on New Years.

Allowing 5-7 teams to make it to bowl games is just stupid. You might as well just add a 13th game to the NCAA schedule if you're going to let everyone and their grandmother play in a bowl game.

Re: 5-Win ISU to a Bowl?

I wouldn't do it. I think the bowl season is too diluted allowing 6 win teams to a bowl (although last year was great!). I just couldn't bring myself to go to a bowl when we didn't even win half our games. Besides, I'm sure the bowl the 5 win team gets relegated to won't even be worth it.

To see the cyclones play one more time until August/September, why not? I would do it, just because I enjoy watching cyclone athletics.

Re: 5-Win ISU to a Bowl?

The idea of a 5 win team making a bowl game is just insane. However, it looks like the numbers may indeed work out for it to happen this year. So, since they are certainly going to send a 5 win team before they cancel the bowl game, if that team was going to be us, damn right I would support going. Added exposure, extra practice, and maybe a little extra revenue, what's not to like? Bowls have been rewarding mediocrity for years, who are we to get all high and mighty about where the bar should be set. You play the hand you are dealt.

Its happened once before. North Texas went to the 2001 New Orleans Bowl after going 5-6. They got the automatic bid because they won the Sun-Belt Conference at 4-1.

We had a five-win season in 1972 and went to the Liberty Bowl. We had a very good game against Georgia Tech in that bowl and ending up losing (30-31) on a two point conversion to avoid a tie game.

Re: 5-Win ISU to a Bowl?

I rarely listen but happened to catch a couple of minutes on this topic. A guy called in to tell them that a 5-win Iowa State team had gone to a bowl before and they were dumbfounded. They had zero clue regarding ISU's football history. So I turned it off. That was my five minutes of listening for the fall.

The only positive to this is the additional practices that you would get with a bowl trip that you would not get otherwise.

I think that there are entirely to many bowls as it is and they are very watered down so allowing 5-7 teams to play in a bowl will only make this worse. If you are not better than .500 you should not have the opportunity to play in a bowl.

“It’s beyond pride. It’s a restored trust. There’s a confidence again, a passion that teeters on swagger. More than anything, (Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads) has restored the Iowa State “it” factor, the steadfast belief that it is great to be a Cyclone...the man’s enthusiasm is genuine to the core...”
