Cashing a money order in Des Moines...

I recently paid off my car loan, and had been overpaying a little each month, so I got a money order back from the bank I had the loan with (not the bank I have a checking account with). Where can I get it cashed in Des Moines? The amount of the money order is both type printed and handwritten on the order.

Usually I would cash a check at Wal-Mart, but I just have a gut feeling I'm going to go all the way over there and they'll have some reason why they won't cash it.

The closest branch of my bank is in Hancock County, so that isn't really feasible either.

Anyone know of place that will cash it?

If you don't need the money can't you just deposit it in an ATM?

Probably, but I wanted the cash for the weekend.

I could just mail the deposit into my bank, too.

If only there was some way to get in contact with them without driving over there, someone get on that.

Can you go to the bank listed on the money order to cash it? That is what I would do.

    2 hrs away.

One of these days I just need to start an account down here, but haven't done yet, that's why I'm asking the question.

Any place that cashes checks will most likely cash the money order too, Hy-vee and their bank have always done stuff for me when I needed and no account.

I would think any financial institution would do that for you, for a small fee of course. I mean, the funds are guaranteed since it's a money order.

Why don't you just use it to open an account with a credit union, kill 2 birds with one stone and it's usually only $5 to open or so.

I sent smoke signals to our walmart, you have to watch carefully because they send a lot of responses back, and the wind can really do a number on smoke messages.

Look for a place with a flashy neon $$$ outside and bars on the windows. Those places are usually the most reputable.

Well you could go open that account today and they will give you cash for that check today. Not the most convenient but better than driving 2 hours. Otherwise Wal-Mart is probably your best option.
