    Fever beginning to set in

    Football fever, that is.

As eloquently noted by a few posters today, this evening will mark exactly 2 months and one day until the official start of Iowa State Cyclone football. Even more exciting (hopefully), is the start of the Gene Chizik era.

    I think I'm getting chills...

Bret Meyer and Todd Blythe will attempt to rebound from a poor 2006 season when they were expected to lead the charge in what many expected to be a potent offense. It seems these two and the rest of the team has a renewed energy and an increased desire to pour everything they have into exceeding on the field.

    Getting dizzy...

Alvin Bowen will lead a defense with many question marks yet some young talent. With him, a few JUCO transfers will attempt to fill the holes left by Brent Curvey and DeAndre Jackson. Chizik's specialty is defense and the Cyclones are in dire need of such a defensive mind.

    Body temperature rising...

All off-season, this Cyclone football team has had to listen how the underachieved in '06. What will they do with a new coach? How bad will both lines be? Are Meyer and Blythe really that good or was '06 the real deal for them? How many QBs will be made to look like Joe Montana vs. the Cyclones in '07?

    Starting to sweat...

Poor Kent State. Gene's first game as head coach. The Cyclones first time back on the field since the disappointing '06 season. The Golden Flashes won't know what hit 'em, as Gene & Co. unleash their pent-up excitement and frustration on these woeful foes. It's not long now.

    More sweating...getting thirsty...

And yes...the tailgating. Oh, the tailgating. Like never before, these fans who have bought record numbers of season tickets, they'll flock to Jack Trice Stadium and converge on its surrounding lots. Tailgates will open, RV steps will be lowered. The smell of grills being started will fill nostrils and the sounds of beers cracking in unison will fill the air with its beautiful sound.

    Medication ingested...

Fans will gather 'round tailgating games - boasting about their summer and debating just what record their Cyclones will have this season. Young Cyclones will wear their favorite jersey and mimic their favorite player in the grass. Cheerleaders will strut about in their short skirts, selling programs and posing for photos. The classic fire truck will make its way around the north lots, blaring that sweet sound.

    Feeling better, medication working...

As the sun starts to set, fans grow anxious as this is a sign game time is near. Slowly the grills are extinguished, trucks, SUVs and RVs begin to get packed up. The last few beverages are snatched from the cooler and tickets are retrieved from consoles, glove boxes and visor clips. Vehicles are locked up and the pilgrimage has begun.

    Regaining energy and strength...

Pouring into the stadium, decked out in Cardinal and Gold - fans are buzzing about the game as the men on the field prepare for battle. Meyer is barking out calls, leading his team through offensive plays as Bolt talks to his defense about attacking and making sure tackles. Shaggy is booming footballs through the uprights as one of the assistants retrieves punts from Brandtner.

    Getting the shakes...

The band has taken their place on the field, forming a tunnel in front of the inflatable Cyclone tunnel/helmet. The warning is sounded from the speakers and the Cyclones take the field with authority for the first time in 2007. ISU's new head coach follows closely behind, a look to kill on his face - square chin tense and eyes burning. Chizik is hungry.

    Eyes welling up...

The final stragglers from the band are now off the field. The men in stripes have signaled for each special team unit to take the field. The clock reads 0-0 with 15 minutes left to play in the 1st quarter. The tee is placed in its spot and the ball gently put on top, after some manipulation by the kicker. Fans are on their feet, not a one sitting. Keys are rattling, hands are clapping - voices yelling words of encouragement. The whistle blows...the kicker signals to his unit and strides toward the teed-up football. This one is officially under way.

In a state of complete bliss...

Ugh...thanks for catching that stupid mistake. Although, if our band members were stranglers, we could use them as assassins on opposing teams...

They already do that with the mascots if they wander to close to the band...
Anyone up for nutting Herky on the goal post?

    I'll pass.

Now racking Herky using the goal post at JTS is something I fully support.
