AAFL - Local football in the spring/summer?

there is article about the new semi-pro football league in the KC star. I guess kinnick is a possible site for one of the teams. If so most of the players will come from area shools like Iowa, ISU, Missouri, Nebraska, Illinois, etc.

I grew up with Travis McGriff, one of the organizers of the league... I have to tell you, if any football league were to be successful, it would have to be this one... What a great concept, you get players that fans are already familiar with, give them a chance to stay around and play some more as well as give people some football to watch in the Spring... I think its a great idea...

I love the fact that the players have to have their degree... Not only does it give players more motivation for staying in school but may also give them the vehicle for acheiving this by being in a college town... I beleive the league will also have a program for players who want to further their education as well...

    Re: AAFL

Katz, 59, says he hopes to field six to eight teams in 2008 for a 10-game regular-season schedule and has agreements in principle to play at Florida State, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina State, Purdue and Iowa, though a change of athletic directors at Iowa may alter plans there. The AAFL also has an agreement with the city of Birmingham to use Legion Field.
JP should be all over this. Bring Spring football to Jack Trice!

It would be great to have this in Ames but they wanted larger stadiums. I would rather have this stay in the state then go somewhere else like nebraska.

    Larger stadiums?

Ok...I'm excited to have football in the area during the off-season.

However...if they think they'll sell out JTS or Kinnick - I think they may be a bit crazy.

AMEN!!! They'd be better off starting at Valley Stadium or Drake Stadium and upgrading to JTS in the future if attendance warranted a change. This way they'd stay in the Des Moines market.

Drake Stadium would be a good place. Parking's pretty crazy, but I don't think the WDMCSD would be too keen on people drinking alcohol on their property, especially if the district is profiting off the rental of the stadium.

    True and Valiant

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

So does a friend of mine, first year playing. I assume you are referring to the Thrashers?

We may go watch him/them this weekend.

valley stadium would be perfect. That place is nicer that some small college fields, thanks to you the taxpayer of polk county, and your fancy 20% sales tax increase 2 years ago.
