    Similac Formula Recall

Just an FYI for all the parents out there with infants using Similac formula.

Abbott is recalling these products following an internal quality review, which detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product produced in one production area in a single manufacturing facility. The United States Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted.

This. It just appears to be more "gross" than harmful, but because of the egg farm salmonella crisis this is going to be blown completely out of proportion.

God bless my wife as we never had to mess with formula.

    You can go now.

I hate the cost of formula. Even more so for the Alimentum we have had to get for colic. Ah well, this is the last baby to use it on, so I just have to suck it up.

No kidding, that stuff is more expensive than gold. And if you think formula for one baby is expensive, try formula feeding twins for a year (we're 8 months in). Yikes.

We've always used the Gerber Good Start (used to be Nestle), because all 3 of our girls had problems with Similac and other generic formulas. It's just a little more than Similac, and way cheaper than Alimentum and similar colic formulas.

Here's a little tidbit for everyone. Wal-Mart sells formula at a net loss to the company. Just think if it had the mark up of electronics. (My mom was a department manager of the infants department for 15 years. I'm not blowing smoke up your ***.)

I don't doubt that. Walmart is consistently $5-$9 cheaper than HyVee and most other stores that carry formula. That's a big deal when you go through 10 cans a month.

    Re: Similac Formula Recall

FYI, Both my girls had to be on formula for a couple months after my wife could not nurse anymore and we used an organic version called Baby's Only. It's tough to find in Des Moines but the South side Hy Vee has it and it's on par price wise with other formulas. This was the only formula that would not irritate their stomach.
You can also order it from the website and get a deal if you buy it by the case.

I know everyone wants to rip Wal-Mart for it being low class (yes, people of Wal-Mart is a great site), but Parents' Choice Formula (and the rest of their baby department) is just straight win. IIRC it's just repackaged Similac formula sold at half the price.

sorry. Yeah, the cost savings was huge, but never having to have warmed up a bottle in the middle of the night, that's gold baby! Went right to solid foods after breastfeeding days, so skipped the high cost of baby food too.

    Re: Similac Formula Recall

We had to use a little formula with my son because he was a month early and he needed the extra calories. I agree though, so glad that he's taken to the boob because spending that money on formula blows my mind. However he starts day care in a few weeks and that pretty much dwarfs everything.

That said, there are advantages to formula - namely the time it takes to feed. Bottle/Forumla feeding takes a fraction of the time for us.

    Re: Similac Formula Recall

We did the breastfeeding thing (Mrs. Velo did, that is) for quite a while and did formula while the kids were transitioning to food. We saved enough on formula alone to pay for our annual Costco membership.
