Re: Germans, Tom Cruise and Scientology

I think Scientology is a little out there but after all, I believe in an immaculate conceception and that Jesus arose from death so it's not my place to criticize other belief systems.

That being said, this made my skin crawl:

"Ursula Cabreta, director of a government-sponsored group that monitors Scientologist activities in Germany was more blunt. She called the selection of Cruise to play the role of von Stauffenberg a "scandal." "

Government monitoring of religion? Sounds like the red-scare of the 1950's.

Churches are empty over there and the govt. is worried about tom's beliefs. A govt. department devoted to cults? Europe is a wierd place.

I'm all for aliens, but I still think Scientology is a cult.
I do agree with joepublic though, it seems odd that the gov't had a department devoted to this.

What is the difference between a cult and a church or a religion??? Membership numbers? If it has less than say 10k members it is a cult, more than that and it is a religion?

Re: Germans, Tom Cruise and Scientology

I guess a "cult" is a little more "out there" and extreme. However my religion (Presbyterian) is extreme to someone who believes God doesn't exist. It's all relative and more a less a stupid question of semantics. Any religion involves a "leap of faith" that will be considered extreme by someone else.

I think we should probably drop the "cult" term from discussion about religion.

I admit to know very little about Scientology, however from what I have heard, it reminds me of what I do hear about cults. Letting people in and not letting them out, even if they no longer believe in your 'ideas'. Of course, Tom Cruise doesn't help matters in his actions. As a professional actor, he apparently knows more about medicine and psychology than real doctors?

Scientology acts a lot more like an organized crime ring, than a religion. They tend to only target wealthy people to recruit as members, then they actually whacked a few people who tried to "get out", back in the day.
