Iowa State Football Notebook: Two major issues

Rush defense and a lack of execution on offense have plagued the Cyclones over the first three weeks of the season.

    No rush D?

    Lack of offense?

These were the 2 major glaring weaknesses we had coming into the season. We knew both would be terrible. We just have to find a way to make some huge plays in somewhat close games to keep snagging some wins.

Re: Iowa State Football Notebook: Two major issues

I am terrified that we are even considering being worried about UNI's rushing game. Because if that is going to be a challenge for us, take a look at what else we have on the schedule. Nebraska just ran all over Washington this last weekend. I just don't think there is much we can do about this problem. We are inexperienced, undersized, and we have no depth.

Do we have anything in the recruiting pipeline to address this? Because I haven't heard much noise about recruiting for our front 7 on D. Until we get that up and going, I don't see this program doing much as far as W's on the field.

Which is why we need to focus more on the power run game. We averaged 4.4 ypc against KSU. Not bad. 20 attempts for Arob and 15 between Woody and SJ plus what we get from the QB's. Time to turn KO and the boys loose....

Rony Nelson will be eligible at defensive end next year, and Aaron Moore should be off suspension, so that should upgrade the pass rush. Already have two linebackers and two DE's committed for next year as well. I think the staff is trying to address the defensive woes as quickly as possible.

Aaron Moore is still suspended? I remember him getting into some trouble but I figured he just a got a game.

I mean, I assume he is. You would think with the weak pressure that ISU is getting right now, Moore would see SOME kind of playing time, right? Especially since Bailey Johnson is out and Moore could spell some of the starters.

Re: Iowa State Football Notebook: Two major issues

An explosive play is commonly defined as a run of 12 yards or longer, or a pass of 20 yards or longer.)

    09 NDSU 34 pts. 4 TD 2 FG. Four 60+ yd drive. 6 RXP 3 PXP
    09 Iowa 3 pts. 1 FG. Zero 60+ yd drive. 3 RXP 3 PXP
    09 Kent 34 pts, 4 TD, 2 FG. Two 60+ yd drive. 9 RXP, 2 PXP
    09 Army 31 pts, 4 TD, 1 FG. Two 60+ yd drive. 4 RXP 4 PXP
    09 KSU 23 pts, 3 TD, 1 FG Four 60+ yd drive. 3 RXP 3 PXP
    09 KU 36 pts, 5 TD, 1 FG. Four 60+ yd drive. 3 PXP. 5 RXP
    09 Bay 24 pts, 3 TD, 1 FG. Four 60+ yd drive. 8 RXP. 0 PXP.
    09 Neb 9 pts, 1 TD, 1 FG. One 60+ yd drive. 1 RXP, 1 PXP
    09 TAMU 10 pts, 1 TD, 1 FG. Zero 60+ yd drive. 2 RXP 1 PXP
    09 OSU 8 pts, 1 TD. One 60+ yd drive. 1 RXP 3 PXP
    09 CU 17 pts, 2 TD, 1 FG. Two 60+ yd drive. 5 RXP. 1 PXP.
    09 Miz 24 pts, 3 TD, 1 FG. Three 60+ yd drive. 2 RXP 2 PXP
    09 Min 14 pts, 2 TD. Two 60+ yd drive. 6 RXP. 4 PXP

    10 NIU 27 pts, 3 TD, 1 FG. Three 60+ yd drive. 2 RXP. 1 PXP
    10 Iowa 7 pts, 1 TD. Two 60+ yd drive. 1 RXP. 2 PXP
    10 KSU 13 pts, 1 TD, 2 FG. One 60+ yd drive. 2 RXP. 1 PXP.

We have 9 explosive plays this year. We had 8 or more against NDSU, Kent, Army, Kansas, Baylor and Minnesota last year.

I picked 60 yds for actual, offense sustaining drives (though I didn't take out like 60+ yd runs) because that'll get you from 20 to 20, and really should result in points, and are probably a true indicator of how many touchdowns/points you deserve. A lot of points without having to drive are probably more attributable to your defense.

The spread is predicated on explosive plays. It's pretty clear we have no playmakers outside of A-Rob, Shontrelle and Collin right now, as well as Austen occasionally.

I wouldn't mind the split back or even the wishbone formation to come out of. But the latter isn't really realistic.

Re: Iowa State Football Notebook: Two major issues

I think the lack of offense and weak run defense has a direct corelation to TERRIBLE play calling and moreso execution on the first two possessions of our games. When you look at the last two teams, Iowa and Kstate, and how much they kept our def on the field, there's no wondering on why there get ran on. Our offense comes out with so much predictability it's sad. Two Arod/AA runs and then a pass. Okay, if AA had the accuracy to expliot the spread and create third down conversions fine, but defs know we are running Arod on those first two plays and putting us in a 3rd and long and thus keeping our Def on the field. You can rip the D all you want but I really feel that they couldn't have been asked to do more than they did last game. Heck, they even chipped in a TD themselves.

We threw on the first play of the game against KSU, and it was complete for 12 yards. On our second drive, ARob ran the first play for 8 yards and AA converted on 2nd and short. We actually passed on ~40% of our first downs

We are predictable on Offense, but it's not because we run on the first two plays of every drive.

The NCAA cleared him, but the Big 12 did not, so he is sitting out this year. I think they are considering it a redshirt year.

The major issue is no obvious upgrade in play from last year and a tougher schedule.
