Job description for Life Skills Assistant

The Ames Tribune has posted the job description for the Life Skills Assistant.

It says the position serves under the general supervision of the Athletic Director. I still think this is much ado about nothing given that the position will be funded privately. Other than the time commitment, I don't see how this is any different than Coach Mac inviting the local pastor (or any other guest) to attend practices and games. Did the ACLU complain about that too? Or do they only complain after an article is published in the Des Moines Register?

    Very importantly:

"The Life Skills Assistant will not pressure, coerce or proselytize team members and will only be made available as a resource for student-athletes who choose on their own to receive counsel or support;"

This phrase would help overcome any Establishment clause challenge.

    Also:

"Ability to administer to persons of all faiths or no faith. "

    That's quite a task.

Re: Job description for Life Skills Assistant

I still don't get why faculty members are getting all up in arms about this. They seem to be ignoring that this guy is only going to be "hired" as a resource, and not as a spiritual leader for the team.

The article I read today in the Daily had the usual complainers whining about how a spiritual adviser will only split the team and discourage non-Christian recruits from ever considering Iowa State. I can't imagine Chizik giving his pre-game speech in the locker room, and then telling all the Christian players to follow the chaplain to a separate room for prayer.

I think it would be challenging for an aethiest counselor to counsel persons of faith and for a religous counselor to counsel persons of no faith. Just my opinion.

Linebacker: Counselor Nietzsche, I believe I've gotten myself into trouble.

Counselor Nietzsche: What do you do in times of crisis typically?

    LB: I typically pray.

    CN: God is dead.

    LB: Talk to you later.

Perhaps the Life Skills Assistant hire is someone who will be used to encourage and assist student athletes to actively participate in the NCAA CHAMPS/ Life Skills Program. Something all of us could live with. According to CHAMPS/Life Skills, Iowa State University is currently a participating member involved in the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. See link:

NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program - Overview

The NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program Committment Statements include a Committment to Academic Excellence, Committment to Athletic Excellence, Committment to Personal Development, Committment to Career Development, and a Committment to Service.

This Life Skills Program, already in existence on the campus, makes no mention or references to religious counseling.

Please note. This post is made entirely tongue in cheek.

Everyone always rags on the Daily, and- beyond it being what 'all the cool kids do'- I've never understood why. No, it's not the New York Times, but it's really pretty good for a campus newspaper. It is not the most expedient source for world or national news; they print AP stories a day after they're released so that they don't have to pay nearly as much money. Most college students read the Daily or nothing anyway, so it doesn't make a big difference. As long as you're not relying on it for hard news coverage, it's got a lot of good things in it. The FYI and Sports sections consistently do a very good job. My biggest gripe would be that about every third editorial seems to be written by one wacko and not an editorial board, but oh well. I like the Daily, but for different reasons than I like other papers.

    True and Valiant

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

The Daily is a decent source of major headlines, even if they arenīt always the quickest to report them, and I love the FYI section

However the editorials and opinions columns make me want to smack my head against a wall sometimes, if I read them at all

I don't know why everyone is so up in arms that a group of non-religious raised this as an issues. America is not just about majority rules. Minority rights are equally important. Personally, I think the whole process was a win-win situation. Chizik gets his chaplain, and those on the other side have a firm definition of what this person can and cannot do. I, for one, am happy that the position is more firmly defined.

Even though I question why it was necessary in the first place, the job description was well-defined by the athletic council. Do you think Avalos and the ACLU will drop this as an issue? I don't see how they have much left to gripe about.

Lets start a petition to take away their teaching assistants. They wouldnt know what to do if they actaully had to grade a paper. They are all against extra resourses then fine, no secretaries or other departmental staff and especially no TAs.

Re: Job description for Life Skills Assistant

Yes, I bet Avalos and the ACLU will cease pursuing this. By this I mean that they will stick to their original positions in their statements, but will also accept the compromise. Those on the other side of the debate will no doubt do the same.

While I never saw the original proposal for a chaplain, I doubt that it was as carefully defined this end result. By taking the debate public, they gave teeth to minority rights by making it clear there can be no promotion (explicit or subtle) of religious faith or scheduling of any activities that create a sense (de facto or de jure) of compulsory religious participation.
Where's the harm in that ... unless what you really want is religion (in this case evangelical christianity) in the locker room.

Sounds good - just make sure the RAs can't teach classes for them too. I had a Math class taught by an RA, and at one point the guy said he wouldn't be able to teach a certain subject to us because he himself didn't understand it.
