    Sales Tax Increase "Marketing" Tactics

They're going after the elderly now in hopes of swaying voters. Nice...

    DesMoinesRegister.com

Proposal is to increase the sales tax from 6% to 7% - supposedly this will decrease property taxes.

Just like Prairie Meadows was supposed to...

No way will I ever vote for the increase, we are already over-taxed.

VOTE NO July 10, 2007******** nolocaloption.com This is the flier that caused an uproar earlier. If a private company sent this out congress would be after that company for leaving the meat of the issue, the 1% sales tax, out of the flier. I think this is very deceitful.

The whole thing is pretty dumb. The large companies are going to see the biggest property tax relief. I think a lot of people will end up paying more taxes because of this scheme.

I know you can deduct your property taxes on your income tax and they changed something so that sales tax can be deducted as well. Any tax accountants out there that can tell me if I would lose out again if this tax went through? Since my property taxes would decrease (less deduction on my income tax) and the sales tax would increase, would the increase be deductible some how?

    Amen and halejuah!

The last option tax for the schools was supposed to ease the burdens and improve the system as well. Looks like Valley got a 7M football stadium and a bond issue to rebuild the school. Meanwhile, a number of DSM schools are closed and still falling apart.

From alot of what I've heard, the sales tax will cost most people MORE.

It's another Lie. Our money will not go to lower property taxes. It will go to more government crap. Ask yourself has your money when they raise taxes ever gone to where they said it was going to go? Remember when they raised it a penny to help cover remodling schools. They told us in 10 years all of the schools would be remodled and be great. Well 2 months after it passed they said it won't cover the costs of that and they will need even more money.

Charles Smithson, executive director of Iowa's Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board, said his agency has no jurisdiction to investigate complaints that campaign mailings aren't factual. That makes a lot of sense Iowa. Let's not have mailings be truthful. If I were on the "No" side of this, I would create a flier something like this:

VOTE "NO" to Yes for Destiny.

Voting Yes to Yes for Destiny will instantly give you herpes.

So unless you want herpes, VOTE NO to Yes for Destiny.

(And no, I don't really have herpes)

Looks at first glance like a wash at best for home owners. It does however tax the rest of the population more. What is this proposed tax for? I do not live in DSM so I am not up to date on the purpose of the proposed 1% tax.

Re: Sales Tax Increase "Marketing" Tactics

I was originally in favor of the idea (not for the property tax relief, but for some of the other programs that it was supposed to fund). The more I hear about the details, however, and the more I see their "tactics" the angrier I get. I wasn't going to vote before (even when I favored the idea), I will definitely vote now. VOTE NO!

Iowa is out of control with taxation. We have one of the highest state income tax rates in the nation, and now they want to increase sales tax to the levels of states that have zero income tax.

Good job Iowa politicians. Keep this up and no one will choose to live in this state. Me included.

It is excellent, that their tactics in order to get voters to say "yes" are in fact - doing the opposite.

When a bad plan backfires in someone's face, I kinda get a little smile upon my face.

I'm definitely not an account but I believe you can now deduct the GREATER of your state income tax and state sales tax on your FEDERAL return. I have no idea how local option sales taxes affect the calculation, if it all.

But rest assured, you will be screwed.

Re: Sales Tax Increase "Marketing" Tactics

Yeah right, I don't buy this BS about lowering property taxes, especially after the latest hike in my property taxes that I am protesting. Funny how I have houses in my neighborhood that sold in the past 2 years or so that are very similar to mine and sold more than I bought my for over 3 years ago yet some of them are assessed as much at $20,000 less than mine. I don't even have a neighbor next to me or across the street that is within $10,000-15,000 of me. All these houses built in the 1950's mostly, all ranch style and all with nearly the same square footage and features. Heck 1 guy has the exact same house as I do and his lot is almost the same size, lives right across the street and he's $13,000 less than my assessment. Another house right across the street on the other side of me that sold last year is assessed $23,000 less than what they bought it for yet they are trying to assess mine for $15,500 more than I bought mine for 3 years ago.

It doesn't make a lot of sense. Even some of the houses that sold around the time I bought mine haven't even been assessed for what they paid for it back then. I've done no major improvements either to justify it and last time around I had to protest it down to $1000 over what I just paid for it after they tried jacking it up to $8000 over what I just paid for it. Told the board I'd take the $8000 profit if they wanted to buy my house from me at assessed price because that is not a bad return on 1 year.

My brother lives in Wyomming where there is no state tax, the cost of living is cheap, and schools are funded by state funds. Teachers are paid very well and they don't have to pass bond issues to build new school buildings. So why is a state where the capitol is about as big as Ames able to make it work but Iowa who has so many more people living in it is almost the complete opposite? Granted I know they have some mineral mining that also funds a lot of things out there but we're building ethanol plants lately and can't tell me that doesn't kick some money back to the state?

HAHA! If you for one second believe it will decrease other taxes, I have a bridge to sell you.

Not you specifically 22, just anyone that believes this line of crap.
