    Schedule

One thing the TV announcers pointed out yesterday was that Snyder won more games than all the previous head coaches at K State combined. Which got me thinking about the Snyder formula for rebuilding.

Part of that formula was scheduling. They always played cupcakes for their non conference games which helped them get bowl eligible every year. Playing in bowls resulted in more talent which made for continuous improvement and more bowl games. Then came the string of 10 win seasons. Nobody cared who they beat.

I know it has been discussed before but with conference realignment it may be a good time to change our non conference scheduling philosophy. Speaking only for myself a trip to Arizona in January sure beats a trip to Iowa City in September.

Your name is Hit it Hard...but you would like to just hit it soft for a little bit, then hopefully grab 2-3 conference games to become bowl eligible?

Yeah, why change the way we schedule? I mean, everyone is so happy with the program where it is, why shake it up?

    Re: Schedule

Snyder learned it from Hayden - Actually its probably the best thing to do, I don't know why we scheduled Utah this year - I doubt ticket sales will be any higher than they would be against a cupcake they aren't in our recruiting area. Not sure I want to play absolute cupcakes and then take a beating in the conf season - but I could see Scheduling Rice, Tulsa, SMU, etc. Teams that get us some press within our primary recruiting area but are beatable most years.

    Re: Schedule

I agree.. unless you are in national title talk (ISU never will be) then it doesn't matter who you beat. Get your 6-7 wins and then on a few good years, pick up 8-9 wins. I think it's good for the program to participate in bowl games and keep the fans excited.

After Utah blows us out by 20+ we'll wish we played Army again...

Exactly. At the end of the year nobody cares who you beat. They see that youre at home, or that you made a bowl, or that you put 8-9 wins together and got to a nice bowl. They dont care that 2-4 of those were against teams like upper western sisters of the poor state community college. And their perception from there, can effect fan excitement, recruiting, and therefore continued improvement as a program down the road.

Shouldve paid out the money to get Utah off the schedule. Depending how the rest of the season goes, it could end up costing us more to play it than to have bought out

    Re: Schedule

If it gets us to a bowl game, I don't care if we play against high school teams or if we play texas every single week, as long as we get those 6 W's on the schedule.

    Re: Schedule

When ISU can't beat its closest divisional competitor on a neutral field, scheduling cupcakes in non-conference is unlikely to matter, at least most seasons.

Synder's powerhouse teams beat up on cupcakes by scores of 62-3, then won division titles by beating the majority of its conference competition.

Why can't we just win an additional game (or maybe even two) in the conference each season, against beatable teams?

Getting crushed by Iowa last week didn't make ISU lose a winnable game against Kansas State this week.

I really hate the following philosophy, not because I don't see the reasons people support it, but because it isn't an automatic formula:

"This program will never get a foothold unless we orchestrate just-barely bowl bids for a few years. Then, suddenly, we'll be more competitive in the Big 12."

Depends when we put them on the schedule. We could have had this game on the schedule for 10 years when schools like Utah had no business with BCS schools.

    Re: Schedule

We scheduled some of these school several years out. This yeah and last year were suppose to be Chiz's breakout years here at ISU where the system was suppose to click and we make an upward climb.

So since we have these games spoken for years in advance, what do you propose we do??? We could buy them out, but we don't have money to spare around this place. We go to 9 games coming up either next year or the year after and we have to get rid of a nonconference game for the next few years, do we reschedule or what?? How will that work out.

I think at one time our schedule was almost full from here until 2014 or 2015 or so.

I would rather see cupcakes until the program is on solid ground. But that might not happen anytime soon if ever. So just go easy like KSU.
