    Will they sue?

Going through some pics on CNN, I stumble accross this. Seems even worse that Wisconsin vs Waukee.

Pretty obvious if you look at their logo from their website:

Good find....they should sue EUI for blatantly copying theri logo. Send an email to the Murrieta Valley School Distriact Compliance Dept.!!

One question though...what are you doing checking out high school photos? Checking out high school girls to Goolge again??

Seminole High School near St. Pete had the same logo, in green and gold... I'm pretty sure EIU found out and put an end to that though...

Well in this case EIU has every right to take action, wow this is a blatant ripoff, they did not even try to change the logo a little. Just change the background color and take off the trademark logo.

They don't even change the colors at all on the page for their summer football camps. The helmets are EIU's. See the link.

Ok guys, I give up. Who are we talking about? Is that an infringement on the San Diego chicken, or what?

    Re: Will they sue?

I say we let each school's football team fight for it on the field. Ahh... maybe not... because Iowa doesn't have a graphic design school, so they'll ask someone from Iowa state to make them a new logo after they lose. And that puts us in a bind, do we give them a sweet logo... or make our graphic design program look bad by giving them the quality of logo they deserve?

    Re: Will they sue?

West Harrison high school used to have the logo in the early nineties I think. They have since stopped.

My hometown still uses the "cocky cardinal" logo of ISU's past, we did make a modification however. Treynor Schools

    Re: Will they sue?

This was discussed on the hawk board and they all like to think that they are being copied.

It's the chicken or the egg issue to me.

I have now idea why anyone would want to copy this logo of a droopy eyed chicken. What is that thing under his eye anyway?....

    Re: Will they sue?

Even if it is copied, it's not unusual for the college or university to grant permission for their little trademark to be used by a high school. Don't rush to the wrong conclusion.

Didn't the High School & their mascot exist before Hayden Fry implimented the tiger-hawk emblem? (curious)

The Little Hawk mascot did exist long before Haydn Fry was on the scene (City High opened in 1934), but for a very long time, the only logo was a cartoon hawk similar to the original Herky. (Strikingly similar in fact, but the two aren't related.) I graduated from City High, and I had never considered the possibility that CHS had the tigerhawk before the UI did. I remember having a conversation with our athletic director that stated otherwise, but I looked anyway. I spent quite a while tonight trying to find anything on it, but I can't. I've reached the conclusion that City started using its modified design about 1980, two years after Iowa started using the tigerhawk.

Very true, but in this case he's correct. As stated above, I graduated from City High. I remember my athletic director telling me that the UI has a long-standing agreement with City High allowing us to use the modified "Little Hawk" logo, but that they didn't allow anyone else to use it for any purpose. Like I said, I can't find any information in print to back this up, but fwiw, I searched through tons of high school hawk logos for anything similar to Iowa's or City High's, and the OP high school was the only one that I found. I'm pretty sure that City High is the only school allowed to use the tigerhawk.

    I found this interesting:
As if Wisconsin's Bucky Badger, Purdue's Boilermaker, and Iowa State's Cy the Cyclone weren't enough, Herky has also found competition at home. When Hayden Fry arrived on campus in 1978, he introduced an alternative symbol to represent the football program. Preferring a fiercer looking, less cartoon-oriented image, he created the "tiger hawk." Knowing when to pick his fights, Herky made peace with the new Hawkeye symbol and soon donned a tiger hawk on his own helmet. Another competitor emerged in the early 1980s when artist Tom Shaff, 75BA, drew a leggy, feminine version of Herky. He called his character Hawkeye Rose and presented it to the women's athletic department as a possible symbol for their programs. Shaff's idea was to create a less aggressive, non-confrontational symbol for women's athletics at Iowa. But when Shaff's first sketches showed Hawkeye Rose in fishnet stockings and high heels, people raised their eyebrows. The entrepreneurial artist sold quite a few Hawkeye Rose T-shirts and ball caps around campus, but the new, sexier symbol never caught on with university officials.
How novel. A "Hooker Herky". Searched and searched for a pic, but there aren't any to be found.

    True and Valiant

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.
