    Rod Beck dies at 38

He seemed like a great guy and had an awesome year for the cubs in 1998.

Re: Rod Beck dies at 38

my guess is this was a drug induced death. A few years ago while he was still active, he took a "leave" from baseball. His leave was so he could go through drug rehab and I do not think it worked. Apparently he liked the nose candy.

I have this information from an individual within the Cubs organization from a few years ago.

Wasn't Beck the guy who lived in a trailer in the Principal Park parking lot when he was with the I-Cubs a few years back? I think I remember reading about him partying with fans in his trailer after the games. It's sad when someone so young dies but it does seem like he led a fairly hard lifestyle.

    Yes, that was him.

It always sucks when someone dies so young...no matter the circumstances.

Re: Rod Beck dies at 38

I came across this from an espn.com article from Beck's RV livin' days in DM: "He hangs with teammates. He hangs with groundskeepers. He hangs with fans. Even former Iowa State coach Larry Eustachy has told people that he wants to head to Des Moines and meet Shooter.

"That would be something," Beck said."

    You can say that again.

Some friends and I actually did throw back a few with the Shooter and some other fans on one occasion. His beer of choice was Coors Light, which would have been a step up for LE, and he wasn't shy about passing around a gigantic bottle of SoCo. Good times.

He was very laid back and saved 300 games.

Re: Rod Beck dies at 38

I certainly don't know anything about this guy other than his career stats and I don't want to be disrespectful of the departed.

But I have been wondering for some time if we will soon start to see some sort of byproduct of the steroid era...like premature deaths or pecuiliar diseases with the athletes that have availed themselves of these drugs.

Again, I am not saying Rod Beck did steroids and this caused his death...I am just wondering what the health byproduct will be (if any) in all of these guys that have done these performance enhancing drugs. I personally believe a huge percentage of guys have been and are still doing these things (first steroids then HGH and soon it will be something else).

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.
