Ben Bruns: Time to move on

Here's some perspective from Cyclone All-American Ben Bruns on where the Iowa State football team will go after a tough loss to Iowa. I think you'll enjoy this.

That's a good article, but it would ruin my chances of moping about the loss all week. I'll need time to decide. Or some coupons.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.

Yes and I will feel a lttle better if someone replaced some of the fifty million credits I lost on the point spread.

Re: Ben Bruns: Time to move on

This is great perspective. I found this paragraph to be the most interesting:

The Cyclones are in a bad place right now. They are in the valley. A week like this is torturous. The frustration of an experience like Saturday hangs on players and coaches like a weight throughout every waking moment of the week. For several hours a day, the pain is lessened as the team exerts itself on the practice field. Work is the only form of therapy that even comes close to helping. At the end of the day, the only real way out of the valley is to step back on the playing field.
My opinion - the best way for the team to make themselves feel better? Take their frustrations out on K-State by smacking them around for 4 quarters.

I haven't read the column yet, but the thread title alone tells me that I agree with him.

    Let's go get some mildcat!

Re: Ben Bruns: Time to move on

He said, "Look for KSU to try and pressure the Cyclones the same way: Establish the run, get the safeties up in the run game, then throw over the top."

Why don't we try this? It seems that our only long passes have been to tight ends or right into the middle (of coverage). Let's toss a few toward the corners and let our guys run under or jump up to get it. We have wide receivers who can do much more than just take short passes and use picks.

I'd love this as well. But two reasons come to mind:

    1. The offensive line can't sustain blocks long enough for Arnaud to make the throw

    2. Our receivers aren't quick enough to get separation from the corners, or, if they do, they can't get to where the ball is thrown

Maybe not against Iowa, but certainly they could have done it against Northern Illinois (with short, slow corners). Yet, they just kept calling underneath routes (perhaps to pad Arnaud's completion percentage).

Separation isn't just a matter of speed. It is mostly timing, faking, and precision on routes (e.g. Blythe). Surely one of our recievers can through a fake and go toward the corner for a ball tossed by Arnaud before the rush gets to him. What Blythe did best was to position himself to outjump (and outpush) defenders for the ball.

Re: Ben Bruns: Time to move on

We are in deep, deep trouble if we don't have a second string QB - especially with AA as our first stringer. Herman spoke earlier in the year insinuating that he'd pull AA if he couldn't deliver - well - it is the same old AA and that isn't good enough.

The best way for me to get over the loss is to hear that there is new competition at the QB spot.

You don't always have to be quick to get separation. Jake Williams had several long touchdown catches last season (K-State, Nebraska, Minnesota off the top of my head). Its all about play calling and setting it up with the run. We kept it pretty vanilla against Northern Illinois. And we couldn't establish the run against Iowa. And we were already down to were we could no longer afford to attempt to establish the run.

    3. AA can not throw a deep ball very well. For some reason this is just one of those things he can't do. These passes are out of bounds or picked off more often than completed.
