    Scholarship Situations

A handy guide, I thought, just to let people know how many scholarships are spoken for and whatnot each year.

07-08: 11 currently spoken for, 2 available (12 and 1 if AT goes on scholarship)
    08-09: 10 spoken for, 3 available (11 and 2 with AT)
    09-10: 10 spoken for, 3 available
    10-11: 9 spoken for, 4 available

    How this breaks down is:
one new scholarship opens in 08
one new scholarship opens in 09 only if AT has it, or someone else has it and leaves, grads, etc.
one new scholarship opens in 10
six new scholarships open in 11

It's intriguing, because we have room for two more scholarship athletes for thie year if we wanted to. If that's the plan, you'd think AT might get the schollie this year. You wonder if Mac and staff will hold open a scholarship for 09. Of course, there are always defections and possibly players going pro early, but we could still even recruit for this year if we wanted to.

The list of scholarship players that I know of:

    Seniors:
Taylor (imagine his schollie goes to Eik)
Clark (imagine his schollie goes to Buck)
Hubalek (imagine his schollie is open)

    Sophomores:
    C. Johnson (imagine his schollie goes to Dykstra)
    W. Johnson

    Freshmen:
    Garrett
    Brister
    Boozer
    Staiger
    Brackins
    Vette

That's 11 when the max allowable is 13. It's gonna be interesting to see how this plays out.

Let's imagine we don't give out any more schollies for this year, and I don't think we would. That means we have spots for 3 more recruits for 08. That means we could fit Gibbs and Markolf/some fat or big guy, plus even Thompson. If we use all 3 remaing scholarships on more recruits, we have nothing for 09. If we give one to AT in 08, we'd automatically have one open up in 09. The number of scholarships we have to offer for 09 is three minus any remaining 08 commits we get.

Taking six guys in one class plus only using 11 of 13 scholarships creates for an interesting setup. Of course, like I said, defections, pro status, transfers and redshirts can affect things, but it'll be kinda neat to see how it all works out.

Disclaimer: I realize I kinda rambled thru that, but if you see any mistakes in my reasoning, please point them out.

Well, if things stay true to form, one of the 6 frosh this year will actually still be at ISU for his senior year. But with McD around, i think those stats will vastly improve. I wouldnt be surprised to lose 2 of em by the start of next year.

I've always had a vibe that Wes will be gone after his junior year.

Wes is a good player. He's very athletic. But he was the best player on a badddd team, lets see how he plays when he has a better surrounding cast. He wont have to shoulder the load as much as he did last year.
The second half of the conference shedule, he hit the frosh. wall and wasnt the same. Hopefully he bounces back and becomes the player we all know he could be.
Right now, it seems like Brackins would be the odds makers choice to leave early. He's a highly rated big man that can do a lil bit of everything. If they both were to leave early for the NBA, then we better make the sweet 16 this year with the talent we have on the court.

What I have heard is he will go pro as soon as it's viable, not because of ISU, but to help out his family. Of course, it's just scuttlebutt, but sometimes there's shreds of validity to it.

So the scholarship suspension was only for this last year? I never fully grasped how that was played out

IIRC last year we lost two scholarships, but this year we are allowed 13 again.

    Re: Scholarship Situations

It's always difficult to predict future basketball rosters because of the high turnover rate. I would guess that the average D1 school has 2 players leave per year who have eligibility remaining. We had 3 last year with McIntosh, Dunson and Marsden.
I expect McD to redshirt a couple freshmen next year. It would be difficult to work 6 freshmen into a playing rotation, plus it would balance the classes better.
I don't know that we are home free yet on the scholarship reduction. I know we took a reduction last year, but I think future losses are still possible if we have any more players leave who are not in good academic standing.

OK, here's how I see it: Vette redhirts this year and Thompson gets a scholarship (he WON'T have a scholarship for his SR year). Next year, GMac brings in Buckley, Eikmeier, and either Gibbs and a big or two bigs (maybe one of them a JUCO). Eikmeier redshirts his first year and Brister transfers. Cougill and an un-named wing make a two man recruiting class in 2009. Wesley goes pro after his JR year, which opens up a scholarship for Barnes.

If Thompson Contributes- He Should Get a Scholarship

I have no idea what G-Macs agreement is with Alex Thompson. However, my guess he will be a 20+ mpg player the next couple years and if that's the case he should get a scholarship. I can't see where it would be "rewarding/motivating" for Alex to get a scholarship for 07/08 and then G-Mac pull it because of recruiting needs.

That was sort of actually the agreement.

In the previous posts, losing 2 players a year with eligibility left at a school like ISU is actually kind of a high turnover rate. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Vette redshirt, but I would be surprised to see Eikmeier redshirt, as he's gonna be a steal.

I believe that since Marsden left the team that Thompson know is on scholarship. I am almost sure on that

Yup, that's why I put him on there but a question mark. Either way, we still have at least one open schollie.
