    Why no depth at LB?

Just curious why we are so thin at LB? Did Chizik not recruit the position well or has Rhoads not recruited the position well, or what? Have we had significant casualties (physical, academic, or otherwise) at the position?

And not only are we thin in depth, but size. I have never seen linebackers this small since the early McCarney days. We have three LB's in the two-deeps under 210, which I think is almost unheard of.

Curtis Mathiz and Anthony Green didn't make it either....Just haven't done a good job of holding onto our LB's

Gotta think there's a chance of Lattimer moving back to LB.

    There was one?

Coach Rhoads actually stated on the radio call-in show last night that Lattimer was going to be staying at Defensive End. This kind of suprised me a little bit. However, if someone else goes down, IMO, this may change things.

Just off the top of my head.
This pretty much sums it up. If we had a coupld of those guys on the roster we would not be in as much trouble now. There are currently two LBs comitted for 2011 in the 6'2 225 range and I am sure they are looking at more.

CJ Morgan is a HS Safety that we are converting to LB but I think he needs the RS year. Floyd Mattison is also undersized and needs the RS before he can see PT.

The real issue goes back to before CPR. He just has the task of catching up.
    2008:
Chizik had 2 LB commits: Ferguson who quit and Hamlin who is lighter now than his listed weight on Rivals.

    2007:
Of Chiziks five LB commits, I think only Bibbs and Cameron Bell made it to campus and player. Bibbs was a JuCo and only played two years. Cameron Bell went to NIU to play RB. Mathis, Green and Fabian Brown were no shows if I remember correctly.

    2006:
McCarney pulled in Fred Garrin, Matt Leaders, and Kris Means. Fred is the only one who really contributed from that group and he's gone now.

Overall we've had a lot of misses at LB and we are currently developing what we have outside of the starters. We need all of the 2011 LB recruits to make it to campus and at least provide depth even if they never start.

Re: Why no depth at LB?

Can we play only two bigger LBs the whole game without getting run over in future games? Five yard a pop, 15 play drives by the other team will be the downfall of our defense since we have little penetration at the point of attack.

What good is running the nickel package most of the game if they just run the ball up the middle? Can Woody play linebacker?

CFH HMagic bball season next year.

We played nickel 90% of the time last year with no problems so I don't see why we can't do it again this year.

Re: Why no depth at LB?

2006 class: Fred Garrin, Matt Leaders, Kris Means (only Garrin played and graduated in 4 years).
2007 class: Fabian Brown, Anthony Green, Curtiz Mathis (total washout)
2008 class: Ernest Ferguson, Kevin Hamlin (nothing yet from Hamlin)
Only one LB in the three classes prior to Klein and Knott ever played, which is why ISU doesn't have depth.

Heres to hoping Princeton Jackson wants to come to ISU out of JuCo. That could help a lot next year.

That's kind of what I'm starting to think - perhaps we should "artificially create" some LB depth by switching over to a nickel scheme.

Did Jackson sign that year, or just verbal and not qualify? If he signed, he will have to talk to us during the recruiting process,as I believe we will have to let him out of his LOI. Maybe not, but we are on his list right now with the Kansas schools. We need to beat KState and try and seal this committment.

It is also interesting to note that Roosevelt Maggit was an OLB prospect when he committed, but we are now trying to use him as an undersized DE. What about him transitioning back to LB?

Apparently you should have looked more closely.

    Paul Rhoads' players never quit.
    (They just disappear offseason)
