Tyler Smith to Tennesee and Floyd offers an eight grader

ESPN - Former Iowa forward Smith set to play for Vols - Men's College Basketball

Guess he did not want to go West with Alford.

Also, Tim Floyd has another recruit:
    '08 JUCO guard to USC
Donte Smith, a junior college point guard from Diamond Ranch, Calif., has given Southern California a verbal commitment, making him the fourth commit for USC's 2008 class, according to USCsportstalk.com. Reports say he may try and enroll this fall if his grades come through.

    Re: Tyler Smith to Tennesee

    Now official.

Bigger news then is Tim Floyd robbing the cradle again. For second year in a row he offered a schollie to an eight grader Ryan Boatright of illinois, 14, 5-10. Kid does not know what high school he will attend but was offered a $180k schollie after visiting Tim's summer camp. Boy oh boy. Tim may change the recruiting scene for others with early offers. Kid shows up in 2011.

The news is that he's allowed to play next season.

Houston center flip flops on commitment
Anthony Jones, who gave Texas A&M a verbal commitment on Sunday, has changed his mind after discussing the situation with his mother, Dee Curtis, and will keep his options open. "I want to let you know that my son still has his options open," the Lawrence Journal-World reports Dee said. "I'm his mom, and I know he was coerced into committing. I know my son, and I'm sure he just said what he said to get them (TV reporters) out of his face."
"I agree with everything my mom just said," Jones said. "I was rushed into committing, and I still want to weigh my options." The ESPN Top 50 Rising Senior has a final list of A&M, Baylor and Texas.

'08 PF decommits from Okla. St.
Troy Gillenwater, a power forward from Boston, has decommitted from Oklahoma State, according to a report in The Oklahoman. Gillenwater was also being recruited by Arizona, Illinois, Kansas and Washington prior to choosing the Cowboys

USC jumps to No. 1 after regular signing period

Just when it was conceded that 6-8 power forward Patrick Patterson would join his good friend Jai Lucas at Florida and give the Gators the nation's top recruiting class, Patterson shocked everyone by announcing on the final day of the spring signing period that he was going to Kentucky. What a great beginning for new Wildcats head coach Billy Gillispie.

UCLA was the top recruiting program with two or fewer signees. Coach Ben Howland's recruits included the nation's top high school player, 6-9 center/forward Kevin Love (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and top 50 rated wing forward 6-7 Chace Stanback (Los Angeles/Fairfax). In addition to being the best class with two recruits, UCLA would rank among the top 15 recruiting classes overall.

Am I the only one who has an inkling that Floyd is going around to these 14 year-olds in this van?

Re: Tyler Smith to Tennesee and Floyd offers an eight grader

First of all...why is this not in the "Off Topic" section?

Secondly...Dan Patrick was hammering Floyd for his recruiting of young kids on his radio show last week and Floyd called up to defend himself. He did do a pretty good job in defending himself.

Thirdly...why are some of you knocking Floyd for this practice? Our very own coach is currently doing the same thing (can you say Jordan Dykstra?).

I personally would like to see some of these coaches get burned by doing this...offer a kid early that gets no better and then be stuck taking him or rescind the offer and have every competing coach hammer them for doing so.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

First, its not in Off-topic because its not off-topic...it is about General College Sports.

Second, I would agree that recruiting kids that early is risky but recruiting is SO competitive that coaches need to get in the kids' ears earlier and earlier.

Third, I don't think anyone is knocking Floyd. He obviously knows what he is doing seeing as some ranked his recruiting class #1 this year.

Upon seeing the thread for the first time today, I moved it to the GCS section.

Welcome to CF, where every thread starts on topic and quickly digresses into off topic tirades of how bad our previous coach/AD were, or if this or that is a sport, or turns all political. Ahh the fun of summer.
