The gap between Iowa and ISU is widening

Is anyone concerned that Iowa is really pulling away from us in terms of overall talent, prestige, facilities, money, etc etc?

That is what finishing in the top 10 and winning a BCS bowl does for a team. It gets you better talent, more media exposure, more money, bigger donors, etc.... So, all we have to do is to continue winning and hopefully someday the rest will follow.

I don't feel that the gap has been this noticeable in the past.

No, the football gap hasn't been this wide since the Walden years.

Re: The gap between Iowa and ISU is widening

We also landed on the moon.

Basically for 5 years we were better. After that we pulled some nice upsets.

Iowa is a top 10 team
We are a top 60 team.

They have finished in the top 10 4 of the last 8 years.
Weve spent one week ever ranked in the top 10

Im not discouraged at with our team, just because Iowa is that good.

Its about consistency in the coaching staff, it doesnt matter that Parker wasnt there yesterday. The staff knows each other. That is not the deal at ISU, three coaching staffs since 2006. The gap will narrow next season with the falloff of the their largest senior class ever.

exactly, Dan put everything he could into this game and we upset them a few times but other than that its been all Iowa...Some of you act like its the end of the world, Iowa is a Top 5 team and 20x better than us, deal with it

Good god - all this ripping on Dan McCarney as a way to deal with yesterday's blowout is comical.
He's been gone for four years now...let it go.

They've always had more money and better facilities than us. Tell me when they didn't?

They are in a great conference, and we are in a horrible conference... at least dollar wise.

They also are a senior laden team that has been in the same system their entire careers. I think on the broadcast they said that they have 18 seniors within the two deeps. They'll be good next year but I doubt they'll be in the Top 25.

Re: The gap between Iowa and ISU is widening

No reason to think that Iowa won't be in the top 25 next year. They will return 4/5 on the OL with five having starting experience, Vandenberg has a lot of experience now, return both RBs, have Keenan Davis at WR, and CJ at TE on offense. On defense Iowa will return one off of the DL, but will bring in two other guys that could probably start on a lot of teams this year in Daniel and Daniels, return 1 LB, and return 3/4 in the secondary.

No doubt they won't be as good as they are this year, but no reason to think that Iowa won't at least go 8-4 or 9-3 next year.

Consider this: even though Iowa has 18 seniors....here's what Iowa will return:

#1: We don't play Ohio State/Wisconsin, and we get Michigan @ Home (though we have to travel to PSU/Nebraska)
#2: Iowa will return 4/5ths of its offensive line, and I think the offensive line will be pretty good this season.
#3: Though we lose Stanzi, we bring back Vandenberg, who the coaches readily admit have better QB mechanics than Stanzi (his leadership and familiarity with the playbook obviously aren't on Stanzi's level yet).
#4: We will return 4 of our top 5 RB's, including our 1/2 punch of Adam Robinson and Jewel Hampton (Hampton's coming out party will be Saturday, and I think he will thoroughly impress people).
#5: We will return Marvin McNutt at WR and some good depth behind him (primarily Keenan Davis, who everyone in the Iowa camp is really excited about)
#6: Iowa is very deep at TE this year, I think that talent will flourish next season.
#7: Everyone points to the losses Iowa will have on defense as a reason the team will fall off in 2011, but keep this in mind: I could make a pretty strong argument that Iowa will return 7 defensive starters next season. Iowa will return 3/4ths of its secondary for 2011 (including Tyler Sash), 2 of 3 LB's (Bruce Davis and Tyler Nielsen), and 2 of 4 Defensive linemen (here is where you need to trust me, the only actual starter Iowa returns will be Broderick Binns, but, Mike Daniels at DT has been labeled a 5th starter this season by the coaches, and I am very confident he will play very well in 2011).

So when all things are considered, I actually expect Iowa to have a more explosive offense in 2011 than what we'll have this season, and while I expect a drop off in defensive performance, I don't expect it to be a large of a drop off as most pundits will claim it to be (when was the last time Iowa had a bad defense? I really don't think they have under Ferentz).

Re: The gap between Iowa and ISU is widening

The gap is wider than it has ever been, and it will never return to where it was. The Iowa program is completely superior to ours in every aspect, and it's sad and hard to take but we will never be on the same level as them again. It's like the relationship of Ohio State and Ohio; almost a joke.

Re: The gap between Iowa and ISU is widening

They've made great coaching hires over the past 30 odd years. We've made several bad ones. One bad coaching hire can set your program back a long way. Having 3 of the last 5 as bad hires put us at such a disadvantage that it's going to take years to come back.

And by the way, I count McCarney and Rhoads as the two good hires. McCarney was the right fit for the program at the time, but we held on to him too long.
