    Playcalling O & D

I thought the offensive game plan was average at best. Maybe things changed after Iowa's first two drives. Of course the WR's dropped several catchable balls during the first half while it was still a game. I thought they looked tense and the coaching staff was tense also.

Did ISU blitz on D? I felt like the game plan should be to have Stanzi beat you. He had 17 TD's and 15 INT's last year. Stop the run, blitz, blitz and more blitz. This is how you beat Iowa year in and year out.

Yep, we never gave ourselves a chance, and then we three three interceptions anyway. It was too simple and it did not work against an aggressive team. The playcalling looked like a couple years ago. Too afraid to take chances.

We weren't bigger than Iowa. We weren't faster than Iowa. We weren't stronger than Iowa. We weren't quicker than Iowa. We weren't crisper than Iowa. We weren't more disciplined than Iowa.

I don't think any playcalling scheme on O or D would have made much if any difference. We were beat by a superior team in every facet of the game. They start 4th and 5th year seniors who have been coached by the same guys. They have the exact same coaching staff in place for over a decade. Consistency of recruiting, consistency of coaching, consistency of schemes. No magic formula.

    Re: Playcalling O & D

I don't think we blitzed at all in the first half. Didn't watch much of the second half, as blitzing there wouldn't have done much as the mountain was too tall to climb by that time.

I think it was obvious that Wally was trying to play a base defense and wait for Stanzi to make a mistake. Very reminiscent of the Skladany defenses, even complete with the 10-15 yard cushions for the receivers. EIU forced Stanzi into mistakes by blitzing last week. Pretty sad indictment when EIU can successfully rattle a QB and we don't even try to do it. I thought they gave us the plan we needed, but our coaches apparently didn't think we had the talent to do the same thing.

Need to blitz way more. No pressure at all on Stanzi all day.

    Re: Playcalling O & D

I dont think blitzing would have help any. It just would have gave Stanzie more open places to throw the ball to. The D had issues with players not staying home. The O had blocking issues. The play calling didnt cost ISU this game.

Stanzi was completing those passes anyway. Didn't matter if we had defenders on the receivers or not. May as well have thrown some corner blitzes at him to at least make him feel slightly less comfortable than he does while sitting on his couch at home.

They would have picked up the blitz. They had 6 and 7 blockers and our rushers were not beating their man. They had plenty of blockers waiting to pick up the blitz. Plus it makes it hard to blitz when you need help in coverage.

    Re: Playcalling O & D

Well, we sucked when we rushed. Then we sucked when we passed. Not sure what else we could have done? This was like watching a junior high game where one team had gone through their growth spurt and the other hadn't. It just didn't matter what we did, nothing worked. The couple times we sniffed the red zone we turned it over.
