Iowa State layed down against Texas in 2006?

Chris Williams and Steve Deace had an interesting discussion Friday morning on KXNO. Deace blindsided Chris with his second hand info from a player on that team that the coaching staff indirectly prepared for the game with the primary objective of not getting hurt rather than playing to win. Playing a lot of people rather than giving them our best shot.

If that's true, it's no wonder the Danny Mac teams had trouble closing the deal against KU and Mizzou with the Big 12 north on the line. Not exactly a way to instill confidence. Sure reinforces the common perception that DMac's teams were way too defensive and played not to lose rather than win.

IIRC, that game was 16-14 in the second quarter and then the wheels fell off and we lost 37-14 or something like that. I remember watching it but don't particularly remember a lot of "non-regulars" playing significant minutes. Interesting though.

You sure he's not talking about the 2007 game?

Well, if DMac was involved, it had to be 2006. The 2007 massacre was under chizik's watch.

It sure looked like quitting in that 2007 game.

I can still see those T-E-X-A-S flags running past my seats. What a beatdown.

well, McCarney had the strength and conditioning program changed from a strength and speed emphasis to an injury prevention emphasis after the team had a rash of injuries. It wouldn't surprise me if he took that approach to a game that he didn't think we could win.

Re: Iowa State layed down against Texas in 2006?

The OP didn't specify between 2006 and 2007. So question: Are you saying that Deace was talking about Mac's last year or Chizik's first year?

It's written in such a way as to look like you're drawing a conclusion that may or may not be there. That detail would probably be handy here.

Re: Iowa State layed down against Texas in 2006?

Seems more like the '07 Texas game under Gene than the '06 game under Dan at Texas.

The game was close in the first half. We had just stopped Texas on a 3rd and long right before the half - except Parker committed a DUMB late hit. Gave Texas the first down, they scored a TD right before the half and the game was over.

Still didn't expect to win - but we were holding our own at that point. I don't buy this is in reference to '06.

I thought I heard that we lost a recruit based on DMac's pregame speech of "I will be proud of you whether we win or lose". Not the killer mentality needed to win in D1.

Help me out here. Was the '06 game the one that was delayed/interuppted because of weather?

I'm not sure that the 2007 game could be categorized as "quitting." To quit would imply that at one time there was effort.

Re: Iowa State layed down against Texas in 2006?

The conspiracy theory part of me always thinks that Chizik took a dive for Mack Brown in '07 as a thank you to Mack for mentoring him and helping him get a head coaching job. Though ISU isn't at the same level as Texas, they aren't 53 points worse than Texas at home. Also don't forget that ISU played Oklahoma next week, the same Oklahoma team that beat Texas, and almost won. I don't actually believe this but it's an interesting thought.

Before that day in 2007, I hadn't really looked at Colt McCoy as a running threat. Now I see him as a nightmare.
It really was too bad that he got hurt right away in the title game. Would have been interesting to see how well he could have done.

Re: Iowa State layed down against Texas in 2006?

I don't want to be critical of Deace, I think their show is pretty good. But I am starting to question some of these references to stuff that happend 5 years ago when DMAC was here and how much these stories have gotten embelished since then. I am not implying he is lying, and I don't doubt that he was once close to the program, but that was a long time ago. Stories and memories tend to get distorted over time, especialy now that he isn't close to the program, plus a lot of this stuff is second hand. I doubt DMAC layed down for anyone, I think he might have gotten a little too conservative, but I don't think they layed down.

Yeah the game was suspended for about 45 minutes between the 3rd and 4th quarter I believe. We were forced to evacuate to the concourse due to lightning.

Re: Iowa State layed down against Texas in 2006?

It was 2006 and under DMac. Steve specifically said he never mentioned it before because all the players and/or coaches involved were no longer with the team. That's wrong however, because our 5th year seniors were around.

This was supposedly in game prep during the week, and didn't sit too well with the player. Chris was not too happy to hear that and I'd have to agree with him. It's probably smart to take that attitude in the 2nd half after the games out of reach, but to start the week out with a defeatist attitude sure doesn't teach the kids much about winning. It's no wonder we ****** games down our legs so many times.
