"Good is the enemy of great"

Saw this quote above a eraser board in one of the new photos on Cyclones.com (picture below).

Absolutely love the quote, a great attitude to instill!

Looks like someone's read my dad's fave book... (Good to Great - I forget the author)

And you know - those gold pants don't look half bad with that jersey

Re: "Good is the enemy of great"

I'd be surprised if it was already there. All coaches have their own motivational phrases.

Chizik said he is bringing in an all-new attitude and I bet this is part of it.

Regardless, I just love the phrase.

Stuff it, darts. You've done enough threadjacking.

As for the phrase: I've always loved that saying. Seeing it in a visible place in the football players' area is encouraging.

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

    It used to say:

"I'm really, really proud of your tremendous, tremendous effort today. We played not to lose but we still did. You'll need to be the most improved team in the Big XII next week, no doubt about it."

Re: "Good is the enemy of great"

I wasn't kidding, I just thought maybe they still had it up from previous years. If it were a mantra the coaches were trying to teach the players, I'd expect it to be scrawled onto the dry erase board. You guys could be right, though, and it was made upon Chizik's request.

Re: "Good is the enemy of great"

I don't know for certain but I would guess Chizik brought this phrase to the table. They usually get rid of anything the old coach had...especially when taking over a losing program.

As for the book Good to Great by Jim Collins...I commend it to all who have not read it...it is a fantastic read that can benefit anyone in any line of work.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Re: "Good is the enemy of great"

It's the first sentence in Jim Collin's book Good to Great.

Good is the enemy of great. And that is one of the reasons that we have so little that becomes great. We don't have great schools, principally because we have good schools. We don't have great government, principally because we have good government. Few people attain great lives, precisely because it is easy to settle for a good life. The vast majority of companies never become great precisely because they become quite good. - and that is their main problem.
